I would love some recommendations for a good and gripping thriller/horror/scary book. Recently read and enjoyed Dark Matter, The Girl In The Swing and The Little Stanger. Have House Of Leaves on the shelf but it looks a bit too complex at the moment! Thank you!

My cousin recently recommended Darkness Falls by Margaret Murphy with the warning - 'don't have nightmares' 😬 I have it cued up on kindle for when I finish my Ben Elton book :)

It's a bit weird, but try 'The Last Days of Jack Sparks' by Jason Arnopp. Its pretty much the only book that ever gave me the willies!

BarkandCheese · 10/04/2020 13:59

Have a look at Adam Nevill, his book Last Days genuinely made me sleep with the lights on.

GinIsTheOnlyTonic · 10/04/2020 15:27

Ooh thanks! I shall have a look now

I've discovered a new author (new to me anyway) called David Haynes. If you like things like Dark Matter and The Ritual, try Black Pine Ridge and Klondike Slaughter. I've been hooked for the last week!

jammydodgerz · 10/04/2020 15:36

Another vote as well for Adam Neville - love all of them!

paulhollywoodshairgel · 10/04/2020 15:44

I've just realised read The Stand by Stephen King. Bit of a mistake in today's climate but good and creepy too .

Cheguevarahamster · 10/04/2020 15:48

If you enjoyed dark matter, Thin Air by Michelle Paver is very good. Extremely creepy.

JengaNonConfirming · 10/04/2020 16:52

I've just downloaded two David Haynes books! I plan to sit in the garden tomorrow, with some Malteasers and get started Smile

The Woman In Black by Susan Hill

Robin233 · 10/04/2020 17:20

James Herbert :
The Rats
You'll never go camping again!

jammydodgerz · 10/04/2020 22:32

@JengaNonConfirming which ones did you download? Hope you enjoy them!

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2020 22:36

All about us- my story. By Peter Andre.

You will have nightmares.

JengaNonConfirming · 11/04/2020 09:41

@jammydodgerz, The Bookshop from Hell and Boo. Im terrified of clowns so Boo seemed a good idea Grin

jammydodgerz · 11/04/2020 09:53

@JengaNonConfirming I enjoyed Bookshop, Boo is on my list. Reminded me of Needful Things but still really liked it. Enjoy!

dyscalculicgal96 · 11/04/2020 09:54

The Spook series.

GinIsTheOnlyTonic · 11/04/2020 16:51

Some great suggestions here thank you. I think I'll give the Peter Andre one a swerve @donquixotedelamancha - I need to go to sleep at some point and it does sound truly terrifying

I read Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough two years ago and still think about it. Weird, engaging, creepy, with the most mind-blowing double twist at the end! Recommended!

SirVixofVixHall · 18/04/2020 19:42

Gripping and very tense, ( but not creepy, it isn’t a ghost story ) - Three Hours by Rosamund .

GinIsTheOnlyTonic · 18/04/2020 21:19

So I started with an Adam Neville book - Apartment 16 and just finished it this afternoon and it's lingering with me! Thanks for that author recommendation. Just going through the others now to decide on my next one! I have all of the Adrian Mole on my Kindle too to read before bed - does anyone else do that? Switch to something lighthearted before going to sleep or just wimpy me 😂

Rats by james Herbert

Glenthebattleostrich · 18/04/2020 21:28

I love James Herbert. His Ash series - haunted, ghosts of sleath and ash are very unsettling. The Magic Cottage is a brilliant book. Others is great too.

The Dark is scary and the rats trilogy terrifying.
