I read it in the mid-1980s.

Main character was a girl called Jane and it was the story of her life in 1960s or 1970s. Not a lot seemed to happen, more of a description of how her life was.
Started with her failing the 11+ because she forgot to turn the page and missed some high mark questions.
There was a chapter about the games they played Ie knock down ginger etc
I think the title includes the words king and hill perhaps but have googled intensely with no luck.
The cover of the book was white and bumpy (ie not smooth) and I'm sure it had a bird on it (but have also searched for the penguin and puffin books from that time).
Anyone pretty please? Smile

I don’t know the book, but Collin’s Seagull Library was a popular publishing line for children mid last century. The hard covers are usually blue though and look like this.

Thanks @DancelikeEmmaGoldman but the bird was definitely a puffin or a penguin I think

It wasn't even a particularly good book, it just drives me mad I can't remember the name Smile

Have you tried The King of the Barbareens by Janet Hitchman; or alternatively could be one of Jane Gardam’s novels, there are two or three that might fit.

Thanks @YounghillKang, but none of those are the one. I have read the Janet Hitchman one but it's not the one I'm thinking of.
