I'm about halfway through this. I've seen so many recommendations for it but actually I'm starting to get a bit bored. Mostly I'm not really sure what's actually happening or exactly why the world has ended up the way it is. Is it worth persevering with?
I'm disappointed as I loved The Handmaids Tale and hoped this would be just as good.

Persevere! Then go on to The Year of the Flood which completes the story (and fills in some of the gaps). It's worth it.

I really enjoyed it. At the time I was obsessed with Brokeback Mountain and could imagine Heath Ledger and Jake Gillenhall (sp?) in the film of it. Sadly not to be.
I tried reading The Flood but gave up after a few pages, it just seemed too depressing and meh.

Oh stick with it! Madd Adam is next - my favourite of the trilogy. I actually read that first by mistake. Then went back and read Oryx & Crake. Flood I like as well. Reread them all about a month ago!

I got that backwards - it's YOTF then Madd Adam.
I found the characters in Flood a lot more likeable than in O&C.

I loved it! Stick with it

Perservere it's worth it as others have said to be able to read Year of the Flood and then Maddadam.

Well due to not getting much sleep last night I managed to finish the book. I'm pleased to report that it actually really picked up for me in the second half and became so much more interesting. Overall I enjoyed it in the end and I've ordered the follow up.

I've just finished The Year of the Flood. Again it had a bit of a slow start for me and I couldn't have done without so many sermons and hymns. However on the whole I actually really enjoyed it and I'm a couple of chapters into MaddAddam now.

Sorry I could have done without so many hymns and sermons.

I agree about the hymns and sermons, very 1970's. IIRC you can get a cd of them being sung as a composer set them to music and had concerts.
