Saturday 7th March 2pm to 4pm. Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester. Free
Una McCormack will be discussing the work of science fiction writers Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018) and Vonda N. McIntyre (1948-2019). These two women, who were lifelong friends, were pivotal to the expansion and development of feminist science fiction in the 1970s and 1980s, participating in the main debates that reshaped sf at the time. This talk will cover some of their key novels, such as Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed and McIntyre’s The Exile Waiting and Starfarers, to explore their visions of the future.
Una has written many science fiction novels including both Star Trek and Doctor Who as well as writing for Big Finish series of Doctor Who audio adventures. Her most recent novels are The Undefeated and Star Trek Picard: The Last Best Hope.
Her academic work includes a monograph on the Doctor Who story ‘The Curse of Fenric’ and co-editing, with Regina Yung Lee, a forthcoming volume of essays on Lois McMaster Bujold: Biology and Manners: the Worlds and Works of Lois McMaster Bujold. She has also written a critical afterword for the recent reprint of Vonda N. McIntyre’s The Exile Waiting, from Handheld Press.
In the second half of our event we will be asking the audience to share their own visions and dreams of the future.
