I'm pretty sure the book you're after is Rebecca's World by Terry Nation (he of Blakes seven and daleks fame) and I used to love it. Think it's probably still in a box in the attic somewhere.... seems to be very expensive on amazon though.....! Good luck, hope this is the one you want.
