Up to page 175 and finding it rather dull.

Shall I cut my losses now, or does it get better??

I really enjoyed it.

fishie · 31/08/2007 21:11

give up please give up. christie you can't take any of it in because it is shite.

purpleduck · 31/08/2007 21:25

I LOVED it, but if you're not hooked by page 175, then it is prob not for youLOL!!! Lissielou, what is that you were talking about...thursday next????

janeitebus · 31/08/2007 21:26

I really liked it but am a firm believer now that if a book hasn't "caught" you by about page 50 then you should give up; life is too short!

harpsichordcarrier · 31/08/2007 21:30

I thought it was absolutely shit
but loads of people seem to love it
it is a personal thing, but I say ditch it

Sidge · 31/08/2007 22:09

Hmm, mixed reviews here!

I usually follow the 50 page rule ( expat) but everyone I know raved about this book so I am plodding on, but am finding it so slow I have started reading a Janet Evanovich at the same time.

I found the same with "We need to talk about Kevin" - hated the first 60 pages but then couldn't put it down.

Aaah, decisions decisions... maybe I'll just take it back to the library and get something else. Any recommendations?

Loved it. Keep going!

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 22:17

But this page 175, Sidge. Someone at the library could have been waiting to read this sorry book.

Take it back and do them a favour .

HomeintheSun · 31/08/2007 22:23

My sister read it and she raved about it.

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 22:24

My sister loved it. I thought it was shite.

That often happens to us.

With films, too.

mazzystar · 31/08/2007 22:26

i thought it was appalling
perhaps the maudlin thing i have ever read
cut and run

WendyWeber · 31/08/2007 22:27

I plodded all the way through and didn't find it got any less dull - cut your losses, I'd say

TotalChaos · 31/08/2007 22:32

I liked it but I think if you've got that far and are fed up, give up on it.

MrsMuddle · 31/08/2007 22:37

Give it up. Life's too short. It's a pile of overrated shite, IMHO.

lissielou · 01/09/2007 07:58

the thursday next series is by jasper fforde and its about a literary detective in an alternative 1987 who can jump into books. this is a world where thomas hardy books are hilarious and miss havisham is a maverick feminist. its soooo hard to explain but just try the eyre affair. its one of my favourite books ever.

Celery · 01/09/2007 08:16

I gave up too. Thought I was the only one! Nice to know I wasn't.

ThreeGs · 01/09/2007 08:31

I gave up on it, the first time and wept buckets the second time, when I actually finished it. Probably hormonal at the time . Definitely, don't bother finishing it - there are too many wonderful books out there to finish something you're not enjoying.

MuffinMclay · 01/09/2007 15:19

I gave up, twice. First time I thought I must have been in the wrong mood for it, because so many people raved about it. Second time I realised it was just dull and life was too short.

zisforzebra · 02/09/2007 21:46

I absolutely loved it but maybe it's just not your cup of tea and you should move on.

ArcticRoll · 03/09/2007 20:22

I found it dull and wished I'd stopped reading after page 50.
Another Captain Corelli's Mandolin- people raving about it and I just thought it was awful.

LadyTophamHatt · 03/09/2007 20:25

God, i loved this book.
Infact I've just got it back from my sister so might read it again....

Bouquetsofdynomite · 06/09/2007 17:02

Stop trying to get your head around the sci-fi and just enjoy the love story! The sci-fi will make sense later, it's just so comprehensively thought-through it can detract from the rest of the book.
I loved this, had me in tears , esp with all the time-travelling babies.

I love these threads! 'I loved it'/'It's a pile of shite'.
Fwiw, I completely loved it as did dh, best mate hated it and just couldn't make that leap of faith.
It's a beautiful love story.

kerala · 06/09/2007 17:34

Personally I loved it.

But I have a "go back" test for books. If I have to force myself to pick it up again after starting it rather than looking forward to seeing how it develops - give it up.
