Need a birthday present for nephew - please no "depends what his interests are" answers or "ask his mum" - I've no idea and she's no help! Only know he's into gymnastics

He might already have it but what about 'The Dangerous Book For Boys'.
We bought it as a confirmation gift for 8 yr old nephew and it's full of boy type stuff (tree climbing/how to make a tree house/how to win at conkers/the rules of cricket etc) and both he, and his dad, love it.

Just looking at it on Amazon, spotted there's a chapter on girls Will it def be ok for an 8yo? Don't want to get into trouble with SIL ...

Would think it would be fine as it says great for ages 8 to 80 but you could always have a look in Tesco instead to see for yourself.

my 8-yr-old adored the Guiness Book of records. Spent months boring the pants off us...
