books for teenagers who hate reading!

what would you/yours recommend? It's not my field I'm afraid but I need to suggest some

boy or girl?

Lemony Snicket
Anything associated to a film they like for example The Simpsons
Don't be worried if they just read comics or graphic novels, as long as they are reading that's the main thing
Are we talking girls or boys?

All write for a range of reading abilities and provide books with interesting storylines, good use of language and character.

TBH, though if you have any child that is reluctant to read, then buying them a book will not encourage them! Get them anything that is linked to whatever they are interested in. That may be a hook to pull them on to read more quality fiction.

i teach and the head of english is putting together a list of recommended stuff, he's a nice bloke and has emailed all staff for ideas. (I know nothing dd's 5 & 3) but would like to help him. See below for his email:

Following my appeal last term for a list of books that might stimulate those averse to print to start the reading habit, the following were suggested (mostly by pupils ? the aim was to find out what teenagers are reading, not what adults would like them to read, or remembered from their own youth).

anyone with teenagers?

DS (14) usually a non reader has read Chris Ryan this summer. Also biographies of people like Jimi Hendrix, Cherub series (Robert Muchamore) and those How to Survive books. This sounds pathetic but is actually quite a breakthrough.

Alex Rider. Lemony Snickett, JK Rowling do not work for the boys I know after age 11-12 ish. Too uncool. Pity.

Michael Morpurgo has stayed the course though.

dd1 also loved The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly - not really a children's book, more a grown up fairy tale, but she enjoyed it.

Spoke to dd1 and she said to say that she loved Angie Sage's Septimus Heap series - Magyk, Flyte and Physik.

it can be 'crappy' books - ie. not what adults want them to read necessarily but just stuff to get them to read. He had in mind a particularly disaffected Y 10 girl and wanted to inspire her. Thanks so far...
