A thread for those too busy or otherwise not able to aim for 50 books in a year!
I'm aiming for 12 from my shelves and 12 from a reading challenge

thebrokenspinedotnet.wordpress.com/2019/12/14/reading-classic-books-challenge/

There are loads of reading challenges here too

www.girlxoxo.com/the-master-list-of-2020-reading-challenges/

We are very laid back here, join any time, I imagine this thread will be open till Dec as it doesn't move too fast!

I'd like to join! I did join last year's thread and posted a few times but then life kind of got in the way and I stopped reading. I think I only managed about 13 books so am aiming for more this year! Looking forward to getting some recommendations and keeping a record of what I've read.

princessspotify · 01/01/2020 22:17

I want to join again. I managed 19.
I've got a shelf full of books waiting and I got a waterstones voucher for christmas. I'm looking forward spending it.

MargotMoon · 01/01/2020 22:21

Here's another challenge for those who like that sort of thing:

Sportycustard · 01/01/2020 22:37

So pleased to see this thread! I managed 29 books last year (got to 76% on number 30 by last night so that will be no 1 in 2020).

Looking forward to being inspired by everyone's choices!

rosybell · 01/01/2020 22:48

I would like to join this year after getting a few books for Christmas.

I'm starting off with platform seven by Louise Dogherty ..

Queenparsnip · 01/01/2020 23:17

I read 20 books last year so going to try for a few more this year. Really enjoyed reading the thread last year so thought I'd join in. Still finishing of When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman Not decided what my first read of 2020 will be.

Sportycustard · 02/01/2020 00:18

Just completed my first book - Bone China by Laura Purcell. I've given it 3/5 on Goodreads. It wasn't bad but it was nowhere near as good as the Silent Companions.

drspouse · 02/01/2020 08:39

I'm starting with The American Agent by Jacqueline Winspear, I love the Maisie Dobbs series.

iwonttaketheeasyroad · 02/01/2020 11:14

I wave to join too please. I did it last year and managed about 20 books. To start the new tear I'm reading Where the Crawdads sing by Delia Owens which I'm loving so far .

medb22 · 02/01/2020 14:32

Hello, I'll join here - I might manage 26. Hopefully more. Is it ok to include audiobooks?

So, to start off:

  1. Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne. This was a transitional novel, as in I started it in 2019 and just finished it last night. I know this got great reviews, but I found it tedious and unpleasant. The book was mostly dialogue, and stilted dialogue at that - very little depth to any of the characters. I understand that was a literary device, given the sociopathic protagonist, but lots of the book was told from other characters' perspectives, and they were equally vapid. Also - and again, I understand that this was a device given the plot - I found the blatant pilfering of other writers' biographies and anecdotes irritating and mean-spirited.

I'm hoping to go upwards from here!

Goldensunnydays81 · 02/01/2020 14:39

I have got 24 on my aim list for this year! Have just started we are all made of glue by marina lewycka so will see how that goes, trying to read every evening before bed.

Chickoletta · 02/01/2020 15:02

Thanks for the new thread - I got to 20 last year, aiming for at least 25 this year.

I’m currently halfway through Pride and Prejudice which I love re-reading around Christmas. I’ve also got Jessie Burton’s The Confession on the go on Audible but am really not enjoying it at all so think I’ll give up on it. I prefer reading ‘real’ books but audio books are great for the car.

Look forward to hearing about your reads and getting some new ideas.

ShootTheRunner · 02/01/2020 15:11

I'd like to try this. I kept a list of what I'd read in 2018 and I liked looking back at it. I'd like to hit 30 this year.

Sportycustard I'm halfway through The Corset by Laura Purcell and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

missyB1 · 02/01/2020 15:14

Ive set myself a challenge to read all the Agatha Christie's this year. I started with Hercule Poirot's Christmas on Boxing Day, now I'm on The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd, planning on The 4.50 From Paddington after that.

Schoolinfoplease2020 · 02/01/2020 15:16

I’m in! Almost finished book number one. Hopefully get it done before I’m back at work tomorrow.

lumpy76 · 02/01/2020 16:56

I'm in! Finishing my first book here (ok I did start before the ends year!) Reading "the Testaments". This is the second book I'll have finished since Christmas Day.

Tw1nset · 02/01/2020 17:36

Can I join. I read 25 last year and am aiming for 30 this year. I run a book club so that is 12 I have to read!

I have just finished my first book of the year "My Sister the Serial Killer" which I really enjoyed - gave it 4 out of 5 on goodreads

toffee1000 · 02/01/2020 18:29

My reading attention span has really decreased. In 2018 I did 14 books, last year I did... 9. Whoops. The internet, and in particular YouTube, have a lot to answer for!! I can start a book, read several pages and then just put it down for days.

I think that I’ll probably aim for 20 this year, yes it’s much higher than 9, but I’ll call it 20 Books for 2020. I probably just need to set a timer for 30 minutes or an hour and just read.

Sportycustard · 02/01/2020 20:18

I should have read The Corset instead ShootTheRunner! My book club did the Silent Companions and it was enjoyed by everyone. I will add the Corset to my wishlist.

I'm now part way through The Century Girls a non fiction book about the social history of Britain told through the lives of 6 women born in or before 1918. It's very good.

princessspotify · 02/01/2020 20:51

I started reading The Cows by Dawn O'Porter so far really enjoying it.

CharliesMouse · 02/01/2020 21:02

I'm in again! Didn't quite manage 25 last year so must up my game this year (or only choose to read short books Grin).

I read Ladder to the Sky last year @medb22 and completely agree with your review. I won't be reading any more John Boyne in a hurry.

Schoolinfoplease2020 · 02/01/2020 21:35

The Cows is great @princessspotify!!

Caroian · 02/01/2020 21:45

Can I join in? My reading goes in real fits and starts. Sometimes I'll read three books in a week, but then nothing will capture me for a while and I'll go weeks without finishing a book. I managed 29 last year though, so aiming for similar this year. I must also confess that I read a lot of popular fiction - trashy psychological thrillers and the like, but I'm assuming I'm still welcome!

A case in point is my first book of the year:
All the Rage by Cara Hunter. This is the fourth book in the DI Fawley series, which up until now I've really enjoyed. Some long running threads about the major characters interwoven with some reasonably compelling crime writing. This one though felt a bit... contrived. I'm losing interest in the drip drip of the backstory for the main character and what I think was supposed to be a shocking revelation in this book fell a bit flat. I'm invested now though, so expect I will read number 5 when it is released!

On to the The Dilemma by BA Paris now, which I must have pre-ordered and realised yesterday it had been delivered to my Kindle.

Tinkhasflown · 03/01/2020 02:31

Thanks for the new thread @drspouse, I'm in again.

I'm reading Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe . A fascinating book about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. It came second in one of the categories for the good reads awards list for 2019 (non fiction I think) and I can see why.

@Caroian in terms of books anything goes Smile

iloveewanthedreamsheep · 03/01/2020 03:18

I’d like to join in! Been scrolling on the internet far too much and would love something to encourage me to actually read something worthwhile! Have a 3.5 month old baby so lots of night-time reading opportunities.
Currently reading Agatha Christie’s murder on the orient express.
