A thread for those too busy or otherwise not able to aim for 50 books in a year!
I'm aiming for 12 from my shelves and 12 from a reading challenge

thebrokenspinedotnet.wordpress.com/2019/12/14/reading-classic-books-challenge/

There are loads of reading challenges here too

www.girlxoxo.com/the-master-list-of-2020-reading-challenges/

We are very laid back here, join any time, I imagine this thread will be open till Dec as it doesn't move too fast!

Can I join too please? Made the resolution to read more books in 2020 but tend to go in bursts so unlikely to reach 50. Like @iloveewanthedreamsheep I have a 3 month old baby too so I'm trying to pick up my book whenever she feeds to do a little and often.

I've started with The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier. Looking forward to getting some inspiration from others reads!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 03/01/2020 04:38

Oh I’d love to join! I do manage a fair few books but that’s because I listen to audiobooks and direct audiobooks, I really need to read more for fun and pleasure. I have a bookclub so I know I’ll manage 12 through that, if I can read an extra book a month I’ll be happy.

Have started Bowie’s books but have had to put it aside to prep a new book I’m working on next week, which I need to get read pronto so hopefully can get back to Bowie after that

Glenthebattleostrich · 03/01/2020 04:56

Hello, can I join?

I want to start reading more instead of mindlessly scrolling through nonsense on the internet. I have a Kindle full of stuff so off to decide on my first book. I generally like thrillers and horror / ghost stories. Although I loved The Cows when I read that a couple of years ago.

Keepsmiling1 · 03/01/2020 10:36

I have finished my first book which was The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell. It was a really good read - gripped me from the start and I couldn't wait to read some each day. There were a few twists which I guessed but I didn't see the final one. Starting my second book today which is Where the crawdads sing by Delia Owens.

SpreadHummusNotHate · 03/01/2020 10:46

Hi, can I join too?
I aimed for 20 in 2019, however I only made it to 17 because I’ve been stuck on Milkman for what feels like an eternity! Just can’t get into it - but will power through and hopefully finish it this weekend and move onto something more enjoyable!
Aiming for 25 in 2020

totorosfluffytummy · 03/01/2020 11:10

I read 30 last year, many great recommendations from the last thread!
Picked this book up just before Xmas but didn't have time to read so starting 2020 with
1. Smoking Kills by Antoine Laurain

missyB1 · 03/01/2020 11:33

@Keepsmiling1 The Family Upstairs is brilliant isn't it? I loved it! I think what I liked was it was just very different to anything I had read before, it was a good concept executed really well.

Keepsmiling1 · 03/01/2020 12:52

@missyB1 yes it was! It's just the type of book I enjoy and it didn't disappoint. I always have a look at the Richard and Judy Book Club choices. Probably not very high brow but I think there are always some gripping reads there. I've also read a few books that I wouldn't normally choose which is what I'm hoping to get out of this thread too.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 03/01/2020 18:21

where the Crawdads sing was my last book of last year - interested you hear thoughts from PP who are reading it now!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/01/2020 20:19

Can I join. I joined the 2018 think I managed about 18 last year I think I read about 8 books

I am reading
1/ The Whisper Man by Alex North.

I started it a few weeks ago but shall go back to reading it again tonight. It is very good pulled me in straight away (just not been in the reading mood)

princessspotify · 03/01/2020 20:37

I always look at Richard and Judy too. I was planning on reading Blood Orange. Anybody read it? I also like the look of The Whisper Man but I think that might keep me awake at night

LadyMacnet · 03/01/2020 22:16

Hi, I’d like to join too, although I am aiming for 20. I had the same target last year but got stuck on Ken Follet’s The Pillars of the Earth which was very long (and repetitive and dull) and meant I only managed to get to read 12 books. I am currently reading Milkman and I am really enjoying it.

BookSkark · 04/01/2020 12:19

I'd like to join as well please. I've decided that I'm only going to re-read books I already own this year - I have absolutely no more space for new books, and have so many that there are some I haven't read in years (and some that I've never read at all!). Not setting a target as there will probably be some classics that may take a while to read - I just want to read more and hoping that this thread will encourage me to do that.

I had a very satisfying day on Friday when I was meant to be working from home making a list of all my books in Excel so that I can use a random generator to pick one for me. I've also drawn a lovely book tracker in my new planner so that I can fill it in as I go. I don't get out much Blush

First up is the Northern Lights trilogy. I watched the TV adaptation of the first one before Christmas and it felt really slow, so will be interesting to see if the book is the same.

drspouse · 04/01/2020 12:32

Ooh welcome one and all.
I am afraid o get rid of most books after one reading!

@BookSkark - have you read ‘Howard’s End is on the Landing’? It’s by Susan Hill and is about her year of only reading books she already owns. A really lovely book which got me reading lots of things I wouldn’t otherwise have thought of.
I’ve also pledged not to buy so many books this year.

BookSkark · 04/01/2020 14:56

No, no - I'm NOT buying more books! I am off to the library with DS shortly though, so may have a sneaky look for it there...

urbosa · 04/01/2020 14:59

Ooh can I join please?

I've read Hillary Clinton's "What Happened", so now onto my second book - The Great Sea (a history of the Mediterranean). The Century Girls is going on my list now!

babybythesea · 04/01/2020 19:12

I’m in. I’m aiming to read more children’s literature (for 10/1 year olds) as my daughter is a good reader but not particularly keen on it - she’d rather do other things. But if a book captivates her she will devour it. So I’m aiming to find more things to captivate her. And so much has come out for that age range since I was a child - I feel I missed out!
I also have lots of books I haven’t read - bookworm and hoarder of books but new job for both me and DH last year meant life was too hectic to read much.
This needs fixing!

babybythesea · 04/01/2020 19:13

Chickoletta - I loved the Susan Hill book. I was also inspired to not buy. I lasted until April which is good going for me!

elliereads2020 · 04/01/2020 22:42

Hi everyone, ok if I join in?

I barely read anything last year due to various things going on but typically read between 20-30 books. I love chatting about books and previously was a member of a book club but there wasn't enough interest in my local one and it ended in 2018!

I'm starting with The Goldfinch. I'm about 150 pages in and enjoying it so far. I absolutely love the Secret History and have read that several times but have never read any other Donna Tartt.

Also going to try and only read what I already own... my bookcase is heaving with unread books!

SubtleInnuendo · 05/01/2020 16:37

Hello, I would like to join please! I tend to read a book in about two weeks, no idea where people find the time to read 50+ but kind of wish I could!

I'm starting with The Memory Collector by Fiona Harper. Nothing too high brow for me. I wanted something quick and easy as I had an appointment that meant a lot of waiting around so needed something that would be pretty easy.

drspouse · 05/01/2020 17:05

Welcome everyone!

Can I join? I read 52 last year but with a baby on the way not sure I’ll manage the same this year so aiming for 20. So far I’ve read 2:

  1. The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley which I thought was a bog standard whodunnit but engaging enough. Wouldn’t go out of my way to read another of hers
  1. The Subtle Knife, Philip Pullman. I’m re-reading his dark materials after getting the book of dust 2 for Christmas. I think of the original trilogy it’s probably my least favourite but still very readable and even as an adult still shocking
Rayn · 05/01/2020 18:59

Me please. Just read sleep by CL Taylor. Right.... Onto number 2.
