A thread for those too busy or otherwise not able to aim for 50 books in a year!
I'm aiming for 12 from my shelves and 12 from a reading challenge

thebrokenspinedotnet.wordpress.com/2019/12/14/reading-classic-books-challenge/

There are loads of reading challenges here too

www.girlxoxo.com/the-master-list-of-2020-reading-challenges/

We are very laid back here, join any time, I imagine this thread will be open till Dec as it doesn't move too fast!

@Sofiathe2end, I've The Hunting Party on my bookshelf. That's what I was going to read next. I've heard mixed reviews on it.

elliereads2020 · 05/01/2020 19:31

@babybythesea I saw my niece today who is 10 and loves reading. I asked her what she was reading at the moment and she said Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy - she said she's nearly finished it and thinks it's one of the best books she's ever read, full of adventure etc. Maybe your DD would enjoy it too?

I must admit I'm struggling to get any further with the Goldfinch! It's just so bloody BIG which makes it hard to read in the bath or sling it in my bag for my commute etc!

sofiathe2nd · 05/01/2020 19:44

@princessspotify don’t let me put you off!! I still read it in two days so it was definitely gripping :)

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 05/01/2020 20:27

Oh I love The Subtle Knife! I re read the series to DS last year, need to get second Book of Dust

@elliereads2020 I have to admit I love the secret history and struggled with Goldfinch, the first two thirds were great but I had to force myself to finish it

Caroian · 05/01/2020 21:11

I'm having a flying start as I've finished book number 2 already! The Dilemma by BA Paris. This is her fourth book and I must admit that usually by the time I've read four books by an author there will be one I'm not so keen on, but in this case I've enjoyed them all. They have the right amount of suspense that keeps me turning just one more page when I should be going to sleep! This one was a bit different in that there was no shocking twist just a "how is this all going to work out?" feeling. Great if you like undemanding suspense reading though.

I'm starting the latest Adele Parks Lies Lies Lies next.

Re-reading The Northern Lights Trilogy is definitely on my to-read list for this year. We watched the TV adaptation and it made me realise that is over 10 years since I read them. I've not yet read either of The Book of Dust titles, so they will likely follow.

babybythesea · 05/01/2020 22:17

elliereads Thank you for the recommendation. It’s in my amazon basket for next time I buy.

I’m off and running.
First book: Jodie Picoult - The Storyteller.
I’ve read a couple of hers and while they are easy reads I was finding they were very formulaic. This one is not. A huge chunk of it is set in Auschwitz. Although there is the predictable moral dilemma (how accountable are war criminals years after the war is over) it is subtle and what really stands out are the horrors of war, and how people deal with it afterwards.
Enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
A short story by Virginia Woolf next.

Schoolinfoplease2020 · 06/01/2020 07:18

Finally finished the first book of the year (started before new year though)

Will get cracking on number 2 tonight.

urbosa · 06/01/2020 07:44

I got the Hunting Party for Christmas from a relative - need to crack on and read it before I see her next!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 06/01/2020 16:30
  1. When You Were Everything by Ashley Woodfolk - a YA Coming of Age novel that deals with the fallout of a pair of teenage best friends which Could on the surface feel a bit “Mean Girls” but is really well written with characters that you fall in love with, set in New York which is described well. I enjoyed it even if it wasn’t truly gripping, a good one for your teen girls to read! I had to prep it for work so it isn’t published until 10th March

Next up is another book for work...

adhdme2019 · 06/01/2020 16:46

I want your job Pirate Ship!!

Blood orange for me next I think. Anyone read?

babybythesea · 06/01/2020 18:54

I have just finished number 2. It’s a bit of a cheat as it was a short story but I managed to read it all in one hit in bed and not fall asleep. I am awaiting my medal for this feat of tenacity....
It was Kew Gardens by Virginia Woolf.

mamaduckbone · 06/01/2020 20:30

I'd like to join for ideas and to keep a track of what I'm reading. I've no idea how many books I read last year but I think it was 20 plus.

My first read of this year is Transcription by Kate Atkinson, which I'm enjoying very much and have nearly finished.

Keepsmiling1 · 06/01/2020 22:28

@IJumpedAboardAPirateShip what is your job? I always dreamt of a career that involved reading!!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 07/01/2020 08:32

@Keepsmiling1 I’m a director and one of my regular gigs is directing actors reading audiobooks so I have to read the book before we get into the studio and prep it (figure out characteristics of characters, make a pronounciations list etc). It’s not my most creatively fulfilling job and I’ve worked on some deathly dull books (800 pages of neurobiology anyone?) but can’t really complain as I basically get paid to read a book and then have an actor read it back to me.

About to start My Meteorite, a memoir by a trans artists called Harry Dodge - it’s his First book and he’s not done audio before which is an interesting double whammy in terms of directing

cuddles37 · 07/01/2020 23:24

Hello everyone, just found this thread after having a rummage in my garage trying to find a decent book to start. I have just finished 'Our Little Secret.' Before that I read 'My Husband, the Stranger' and so I was thinking of going for a Jo Nesbo (The Thirst) or a Tess Geritsen (sp? )I Know a Secret as these would be a change, sort of.

toffee1000 · 08/01/2020 00:34

Finished a book yesterday, although I started it last year. It was an interesting book, I just need to get back into a reading groove.
My first full book for this year will be The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie. My mum’s a fan of AC and I asked her a while ago to recommend some good ones of hers (AC that is!)

myidentitymycrisis · 08/01/2020 01:03

I’ve read Normal People which was brilliant, although I did start it on the 30th.

When I can’t sleep like now I reread children’s books, currently Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, but I don’t count that!

totorosfluffytummy · 08/01/2020 22:07

Smoking Kills by Antoine Laurain - really enjoyed this. I highly recommend Antoine Laurain!

2. The Little Snake by A. L. Kennedy - I'm about 1/3 in and it is beautiful so far..

KindKylie · 08/01/2020 22:10

Hiya, please can I join in? I attempted to count my books last year and started out well but then faltered!

I have decided not to stick with books I'm not enjoying this year as that's what held me up before. I have already ditched a Zadie Smith as it just wasn't keeping me interested.

So far this year I have read;

Dolly Alderton - Everything I know About Love - found it really funny and thought-provoking in places. I grew up close to where she writes about which probably made it more interesting for me. She's quite a bit younger than me so I found it an interesting insight into the younger experience of growing up and feminism.

Lisa Jewell - The Girls - really good book and one of hers I'd not heard of before. Good page turner with interesting characters.

Katie Kirby - Reluctant Adult - the Hurrah for Gin book, found this hilarious and reassuring in equal measure!

Joanna Glen - The Other Half of Augusta Hope - absolutely loved this and would highly recommend.

I have also had a look at The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse but not sure that counts as reading. Do love it though.

Am really hoping to keep reading in 2020 and enjoying seeing all your suggestions.

copperstrike76 · 08/01/2020 23:15

@KindKylie wow, that's a lot already!

I'd like to join too. Last year I read 16 books and wasted too much time on the internet. I've read one book so far already - Nine Perfect Strangers by Lianne Moriarty, which I enjoyed even though some of the characters were perhaps a bit thin.

I'm now reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. For work I'm writing an analysis of the consumer book industry and I read a lot about this book and how popular it was, so I was curious to read it. Good so far. Using my new Kobo ereader, and I downloaded it from the local library.

KindKylie · 09/01/2020 06:33

Copperstrike it's only because it's been the Christmas holidays and both DH and I have been off with lots of lounging around time. I can't see me maintaining it unfortunately.

Let us know how you get on with Becoming, I've got it here bit just never fancy it. My book group did it last year when I was in a bit reading phase so I missed the moment.

numberonecook · 09/01/2020 09:48

Can I join please? I had a target of 50 last year and I did 56 but this year I’ve started my masters degree so 25 might be a bit more achievable (not including uni books).

So far this year I finished the family upstairs on New Year’s Day and I’m just about to finish the turn of the key

BookSkark · 09/01/2020 13:55

Book number one Northern Lights completed and now onto The Subtle Knife. I can't remember when I last read the series, so although I remembered bits from watching the TV adaptation over Christmas, it still felt like a new book to me.

I may have a horrible habit of skim-reading and not taking books in properly. On the plus side it makes re-read a lot more enjoyable!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 09/01/2020 15:13

I listened to Becoming last year rather than read it, she’s not the best narrator because obviously she’s not an actor and that sometimes meant I drifted off but at other times her emotions really came through and wow I found the sheer honestly just so so brave. I loved it

copperstrike76 · 09/01/2020 15:37

IJumped I'm glad you enjoyed it. I like it so far. Apparently she was nominated for a Grammy for the audiobook. I don't think I could listen to an audiobook - I think my mind would drift off. I do like podcasts but even then I sometimes drift off!
