How about Flesh in the Age of Reason by Roy Porter, Penguin 2004? I have used it with my A Level students and I feel that it sums up pretty well the contention of rationality and physical being...it is very comprehensive and quotes loads of other sources you could investigate!

Or Roy Porter, Enlightenment this one, not the shorter one of the same name.
