I don't like books set any earlier than the 1980's

The lovely bones, I honestly broke my heart for the majority of it. Haven't been able to read it again which I have a tendency to do!

The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams.

It actually has a happy ending but OMG I was an absolute mess reading it.
