books like the Wimpy kid

DD (8) is a Jeff Kinney superfan. read all the wimpy kid books. Twice now.

I cannot get her to move on to something else. Is there anything similar someone could recommend?

DD likes funny, cheeky characters with some nice illustrations (as the WK). She does not like books with girly heroines for some reason.

I tried her in Harry Potter books but the plot is quiet complex and so many characters. So we needs something more accessible.

Has she tried Chris Riddell’s Goth Girl books and the Amelia Fang books?

Kitkatfordinner · 05/11/2019 14:55

Tom Gates. My Dd began with these and moved on to the Wimpy kid series. She also likes Barry Loser.

Novemberblu3s · 05/11/2019 14:56

thanks, will have a look. we haven't tried any of those yet!

Nah mate. You just keep reading the Wimpy Kid until the covers fall off, the pages disintegrate and you call your boss Rowley by mistake.

bsc · 05/11/2019 14:58

Tom Gates! She'll love them.
Ottoline and Goth Girl by Chris Riddell are also fantastic.

bsc · 05/11/2019 14:59

Haha Morris! I love a bit of Tom Gates myself...

Treehouse storey books (and Tom gates!)

OhTheTastyNuts · 05/11/2019 15:00

Another vote for Tom Gates!

Definitely Tom Gates. It's the British equivalent of Wimpy Kid and there are tonnes of books. Also the Dog Man books.

jackparlabane · 05/11/2019 15:11

Tom Gates is better and British, Barry Loser is more fart/willy jokes.
Similar reading level - The Bolds, about hyenas passing as humans in Teddington. The Naughtiest Girl in the School might appeal if she likes school-set stories - dd liked all those and Malory Towers /St Clare's, but didn't like any other Blyton except Secret Island.

I just ordered a few Tom Gates books. If she likes it, we are gonna be busy for a while.

Thanks!!

Mr Gum is hilarious, I'd second that suggestion.

Btw - has she read the new Wimpy Kid published on Monday?? My WK-mad DS got it yesterday after school and finished it this evening!
