With Christmas coming up my oh is starting to ask what books I would like.
Can you please recommend some books you loved..
Thrillers are my favourite.
Last Christmas he bought me 'a thousand splendid suns' which he had read rave reviews about. I put it to back of the list to read, however once I started I could not stop. I LOVED it.

Loved ‘The truth about the Harry Quebert affair’ very good

Nutkin123 · 06/10/2019 18:28

Have you got the BBC good reads app? If you put in what you’ve read it’ll make suggestions on what to read next!

MrsEricBana · 06/10/2019 18:32

The Circle - Dave Eggers
The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
Commonwealth - Anne Patchett

AdaColeman · 06/10/2019 18:36

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell
Fatherland by Robert Harris
I've enjoyed both of these.

Doobydoo · 06/10/2019 18:39

All the Susan Hill Simon Serrailier ones
All the Nicci French ones including Frieda Klein series
We need to Talk about Kevin by Lionel Schriver..not a thriller but disturbingly compelling.

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

Newmum102 · 06/10/2019 18:41

Currently reading The Art Of Dying by Ambrose Parry, it’s quite good.
Just finished The Secret Commonwealth by Phillip Pullman and absolutely loved it!

There are lots of books I think are really GOOD - well written, important, whatever. But books I really LOVE are far fewer, where the world sticks with me for ages, and I really care about the characters for a long time afterwards.

I LOVE (and reread regularly):
The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
Fortunes Rocks - Anita Shreve
the His Dark Materials books - Philip Pullman
The Dog Stars - Peter Heller
Pompeii - Robert Harris
The Daughter of Time - Josephine Tey

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 09/10/2019 19:17

@Rosegoldwatcher Have you read Liz Jensen's The Rapture? Really good, and stays with you.
I would add, anything by Paula Daley.

rosegoldwatcher · 09/10/2019 19:21

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants - yes I have read The Rapture - really good and as disturbing as The Uninvited. I would love to see a film made of it. The only other one of hers I have read is The 9th Life of Louis Drax - didn't like that one so much.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 09/10/2019 19:28

Interesting Rose, will make a note to read The Univited. Thanks.

tobee · 09/10/2019 21:47

@Nutkin123 I tried to search BBC good reads app and nothing came up??

Nutkin123 · 09/10/2019 22:07

Ooh sorry! @tobee it’s just Goodreads if you search in apps!

The Ms Graves mysteries by Aubyn, although I'm not sure how you'd find them? My husband enjoyed these even though (because?) they're about a crazy old lady who drinks too much and goes to the deep South. I think he liked the music references...
