Fairy Stories

One of our book club members has mentioned she would like a themed bookclub - and suggested fairy tales - a children's one and a modern take on fairy stories. I suppose like Angela Carter's one about Red Riding Hood et al.

I don't particularly like the disney style ones, but she has sent me a couple of audioboooks which seem to be based on Eastern European fairy tales which I am liking. Any recs?

Phillip Pullman's Grimm Tales?

Naomi Novik - Spinning Silver (loosely based on Rumpelstiltskin), and Uprooted (less specific, but very fairy-tale-esq, includes Baba Yaga etc). They're both really good, and the audiobooks are excellent.

Sadik - yes that is one she put on my ipod. I did enjoy it.

Dandy - ooh that does sound good I loved the books I have read of his.

Thanks All!

Robin McKinley has written a couple of books based on fairy stories, Beauty is particularly good, (Beauty and the Beast).

The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden is based on Russian folktales and is beautifully written.

Sorry, do you mean a children’s book group, or fairy tales rewritten for adults?

I really enjoyed Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth which is loosely based on Rapunzel. The Snow Child by Eown Levy is also an excellent read and very fairy-tale like .... And I've just read Uprooted mentioned upthread

I don't like Gregory Maguire's writing (Wicked) but he also wrote 'Mirror Mirror' which is based on Snow White and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (Cinderella). Lost Boy by Christina Henry is based on Peter Pan (haven't read this yet)

There are lots of young adult books based on fairy tales - Cinder by Marissa Meyer, and The Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Mass, Dorothy must Die (Wizard of Oz) - of varying quality ...
