Not my normal kind of thing at all but for some reason fancy giving him a try. Any recs for a good one to start.

In my head I bracket him with Ken Follett and I only managed a bit of Pillars of the Earth.....

Fatherland is his best, by a long shot.

Pompeii is a good introduction, easy to read with a plot that gallops along. I like his Cicero trilogy for the characters and Roman political intrigue, the first book is Imperium. My favourite is An Officer and a Spy based on the revelations around the Dreyfus Affair.

I enjoyed both 'Pompeii' and 'An Officer and a Spy'.

I quite like Robert Harris. Conclave and Enigma also good, but agree Fatherland stands out.

They are quite smart but easy reads. I’ve not read any Follett but think Harris is less wordy and more varied in subject matter from a superficial comparison? Looking forward to his new one actually.

I thoroughly enjoyed Pompeii and the Rome books. Maybe I should try Fatherland.
