jaynehater · 07/08/2007 09:29

Hey, snap, Highlander !!!

I just started Birdsong too, and wondered the same!

Never thought of posting here though, thanks !!!

aloha · 07/08/2007 09:29

Yes, a million times better.

Desiderata · 07/08/2007 09:33

It's a hundred million times better.

I was disappointed with Charlotte Grey ... but I certainly don't regret reading it.

Slubberdegullion · 07/08/2007 09:34

No spoilers, but there is a scene in a rowing boat that (imo) is the sexiest bit of writing ever.

Bloody excellent book (is def. in my top 10)

Cappuccino · 07/08/2007 09:35

birdsong is one of the few books I have just abandoned partway through

god it goes on

Wheelybug · 07/08/2007 09:35

Birdsong is an amazing book (Charlotte Gray ok, but just nowhere near in the same league !)

Enjoy !

CountessDracula · 07/08/2007 09:35

Hmmmmm not sure Highlander. May do a top ten books in my profile (fav 3 in there already)along side my desert island discs.

MuffinMclay · 07/08/2007 21:39

yes

beansprout · 07/08/2007 21:40

I have read way too many books by Sebastian Faulks in the vain hope that they might be as good as Birdsong. Definitely his best book.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/08/2007 21:40

Not read Charlotte Grey but wasn't bowled over by Birdsong -

TotalChaos · 07/08/2007 22:33

I think most war books would be better than Charlotte Gray. Thought the whole storyline was a huge insult to the brave women who took on very risky work in occupied Europe for SOE. Never read Birdsong mind.

Other good war books:-
Goodbye to all that (biographical)
Regeneration, Life Class (Pat Barker)
Flowers in the Field (biographical, about women in SOE.)

Lilymaid · 07/08/2007 22:46

There is also Siegfried Sassoon's Memoirs of an Infantry Officer - which dovetails in with the Robert Graves book as they were wartime friends . I must admit that the books by Barker, Faulks, Sassoon and Graves are now completely muddled up in my mind.

ooh, cheers for all the other suggestions. The Amazon wish list is becoming rather large

I liked 'em both. However, there are some desperately sad children-related passages in CG - brace yourself.
