I would say aimed at 10-14s, but suitable for 8 yr-olds (fluent readers obviously).
It's been quite heavily marketed I think.
The publisher (Chicken House) seems to have a knack of finding authors with fresh and unusual plots (e.g. Elizabeth Kay and Cornelia Funke).
