HP fans can you answer a question plse?

I've just starting reading the DH but it has been so long since I read the last one and I read fast and don't tend to retain much memory of what I read so I can't remember much about it!!!

Please can someone explain what horcruxes are and why they need to find them? (I have a vague idea)

(Sorry I know I should just look at the previous book but we have moved since then and it is somewhere in the loft....)

The horcruxes are sort of containers for bits of voldemort's soul which makes him harder to kill - they have to destroy all the horcruxes before they can kill him.

Ah yes thank you! How do they know where/what they are?

the horcruxes are the objects that voldermort used to keep a part of his soul in......he split it into 7 as it the most powerful number.enjoy the book.........its fab

they're not 100% as to where they are......remember 2 have already been destroyed

Do they know what they're looking for? (ie what objects he's used?)

They have a vague idea but noting set ins stone..............

they have made guesses based on what they know of LV - that he coveted things that are valuable and historical ie slytherins locket etc, and also that he planted them in places of importance to him.

Do you remember they found one in the cave where he went on a trip with the orphange and scared 2 children? So they need t owork back over this life and the way he thinks.

DD told HP that he thinks there will something of value from each class house of Hogwarts and that he also suspects the snake Nagini is one. (thats not a spoiler he tells him that in HBP).

One thing of impoertance is that snape makes the unbreakable vow with Malfoys mum to protect Malfoy in the task he has been set by LV, namely killing DD.

Actually, it is probably worth re reading the part where DD dies. I will try to do a breif update but it is hard to do it without giving away too much as once you know the ending you realise what you should have noticed first time round (does that even make sense!!)

DD and HP return to Hogsmeade from the cave where they got the locket, DD is very weak from drinking the cursed water and is carrying the injury to his hand from retreving the ring from LV old house.
They see the dark mark go up over Hogwarts.
they both race there on broomsticks and arrive on the highest tower together.
DeathEaters are in the school and Malfoy and (I think) 2 deatheaters burst onto the tower.
DD uses a stunning spell on Harry (who is under the invisibility cloak) so they do not know he is with him
in the split second he takes to stun Harry it gives Malfoy the chance to use the expelliarmus curse against DD and he loses his wand
Malfoy tries to kill DD but hasnt got the bottle and DD is talking him out of it and Malfoy is lowering his wand
snape burts onto the tower and DD says "Severus" in a pleading voice and snape walks up to him and uses the AK spell to kill him
Snape, Malfoy and deatheaters then escape

there, think that about covers it.
