I read a book years ago about a family living in London maybe? A typical poor-ish family back in the 80s/90s, dad was a drunk, house was a mess, kids left to fend for themselves.
Basically the father is abusive to his wife and kids. Possibly tries to molest one of the children. He ends up getting murdered, maybe with a hammer or a whiskey bottle. The mum gets life in prison for it but all isn't as it is made out to be.
Pleaseeee help me find it before I end up losing the plot. Google is giving me nothing!
