Just getting it ready for tomorrow!

OP posts:
rosmerta · 23/07/2007 20:57

Don't worry about the film, they'll probably cut the whole battle and just have V & HP somehow finding each other

LaDiDudleyDursley · 23/07/2007 21:06

I wanted to find out how Lily and James fell in love, how he changed from the arrogant idiot that we saw in Snape's memory to a man who Lily would love. I thought that part of the theme of this book was how people can change, especially during adolescence, and I felt disappointed that this wasn't reflected in finding out about James.

After seeing OOP I too was wondering what they could cut out of this film.

rosmerta · 23/07/2007 21:20

IMO, they could cut most, if not all, of the camping!

allmytimeonmumsnet · 23/07/2007 21:23

Well I assumed Victoire was a girl but it did strike me that she is Bills daughter and Bill was bitten by a werewolf wasn't he! Teddy was half werewolf too from Lupin. So if Victoire is a girl could be some interesting genetic stuff going on for their offspring. Hadn't occured to me that Vic might be a boy...perhaps that would work better. After all Lupin made a big scene about what he had passed on to his child. Perhaps this is JK's way of getting round all that

PS I also wondered about the sword and Grimhook (sp?) and mentioned it on another thread. Someone pointed out about the hat. I'd missed that in my rapid read. But felt very smug knowing that V had tried to scorn Neville and it had backfired with Neville being able to get the last horcrux. Bet poor old Grimhook was a bit put out though. Talk about being double-crossed when given a sword that makes its own way home!

AttilaTheMum · 23/07/2007 21:36

The first 100 or so characters appear on 'last hour', even if they are on separate lines, so you need at least 100 * to hide important spoilers.

HungarianHorntailsBumcheek · 23/07/2007 21:40

Allmytimeonmumsnet...that's a good point (sorting hat & sword). Haven't read all this thread so dunno what's been said already, but wanted to say hello to everyone

Was brill though, and would like to see a spin-off involving Harry and everyone's kids - would be great to know who else is still at Hogwarts after all that time...come on JK, purrrrrlllleease????

RubeusDuck · 23/07/2007 21:44

No... Hogwarts the Next Gen would be absolutely crap. Voldemort was supposed to be the biggest bad ever, so to top the original series you'd have to do a bigger bad which would be silly.

I think she should do a Star Wars-style prequel (only to be not crap ) so we can find out more about Lily, James and Severus... g'wan JKR, you know it makes sense.

HungarianHorntailsBumcheek · 23/07/2007 21:57

Have to disagree, they did that with star trek and it was crarp. Besides...we already know how it ends.

Has to be a spin-off of just a small adventure of some type.
Doesn't have to be another big bad wizard, could be something entirely different.

Steward · 24/07/2007 07:41

I too have read the book. Thought that we were going to find out more about Harry having his mothers eyes but never said anything in the book. It just revelled that while saving Harry as a baby that part of the curse hi Voltemort and part of him went into Harry, hence a Horcrux.

Please help if anyone else thought different.

rosmerta · 24/07/2007 09:25

Hi Steward, I thought the thing about the eyes was it was the only bit of Lily that Harry had and was why Snape would protect him, iyswim

FlameDelacour · 24/07/2007 09:32

With the whole thing of Greyback and Dumbledore's sister - children won't see it as we do. They will see a bad werewolf who likes to bite children (and that's all), and with the sister, they will just see any "bad things" that they are knowledgable of.

Steward · 24/07/2007 11:04

thanks Rosmerta. Didn't think it that way.

PhoenixSongbird · 25/07/2007 11:59

Snape says "Look at me" to Harry so the last thing he sees before dying is Lily's eyes . Get a lump in my throat whenever I think of this.

Was really disappointed that she killed off Lupin and Tonks - why? I can't see the reasoning behind it, it took away some of the drama of Fred dying. Although I suppose it was much more of a shock as I didn't expect any other major deaths so quickly.

Poor Teddy. It was (for me) fairly obvious that Harry would live so that he could bring Teddy up in the way which Sirius couldn't do for him. But then you never heard anything about it other than that he came for supper frequently.

I do wish there had been more info about what happened afterwards. What happened to Luna? And did George continue the joke shop without Fred?
And Mrs Tonks, losing her husband and daughter.

And I wish there had been more about Ginny and Harry's relationship.

DumbledoresGirl · 26/07/2007 20:23

I put this on the other HP thread but will post it here too for maximum response.

I finished it last night but if I read this whole thread through I will need another 2 days! So what are the basic points of this thread?

I feel some ends have been left untied but I can't think what they are...

Also, I want to know why Charlie Weasley did not feature in this book? If all the other Weasleys, even Percy, gathered for the fight, why didn't Charlie? And don't suggest because he is in Hungary or anything pathetic like that. He had the power of the dragons in his hands and could have brought them to bear very effectively.

Also, ner ner ner ner ner! I TOLD you all Snape was good and acting on Dumbledore's orders when he killed him. That was SO obvious.

PhoenixSongbird · 26/07/2007 20:25

Some more 'what they did next' stuff here

Triwizardcupcakes · 27/07/2007 10:04

yes, that was odd about Charlie. I thought there would be much more drama, for example with the giants. And I was rather put out that there was no story behind Lupin and Tonk's deaths, just their dead bodies. Did they die together? Was Greyback involved? I think these things are important!
Some of the mid-series books really felt like they needed some pruning with lengthy and irrelevant quidditch games but this one felt like too much had been cut out. I was surprised when I bought it that it wasn't thicker. The camping scenes were boring but necessary I suppose but then the ending was too rushed and there were too many loose ends.
I did enjoy it and I cried in several places (I like a bit of a cry in a book) but I haven't got that satisfied feeling that I thought I would get at the end of a saga.

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:08

Oh have just written an essay on the other thread. Didn't realise there were 2.

Have been away, and been dying to come on here.
Going to copy and paste from the other thread.

Triwizardcupcakes · 27/07/2007 10:15

thanks Phoenix, that's interesting reading! I hope she does do an encyclopedia. I was just thinking the book needed some kind of directors cut...

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:32

Have been away and dying to get back and get on here.

Finished it on Monday night.
I was absolutely gutted by Dobby and cried, and when you thought Harry was going to have to die. Didn't cry for Remus and Tonks, or Fred for some reason.

I thought it was abit "Get on with it" when they were in the tent. But FUCK ME the end was brilliant!!!!!

The way she put in the little twists like Harry getting the wand off Draco meaning the elder wand was his. Then the blood in Voldie that meant he could live. Fantastic, explains the Gleam of Triumph in DD's eyes when he hears V used Harry's blood to be reborn with.

And DD's history was great, and so sad.

Then Snape, I think Snape got to me more than anything else. The way he wanted Harry to look at him so he could see Lily's eyes once more before he died.

His story was sad. Explains who that awful boy was, and why Petunia was so bitter.

I don't think there was anyone who did magic late.
LOVED Kreacher being Happy. That was great.

Was disappointed by the last chapter, I thought it would be like a narrative of Neville went on to do this and Harry went on to do that etc. Was okay, but was disappointed. Not the great epilogue I had anticipated.
Also no mention of George, which annoyed me. Did he carry on with Weasley's WW's after losing Fred???
Hardly any mention of others. And what did they all do for jobs???
I would assume there wasn't such a call for Aurors, but it would have been nice if it had been mentioned.

Loved MrsW racing to kill Bella, that was awesome. Was generally excellent despite discrepancies.

That was my entry from the other thread.
Didn't fancy rewriting it all

BandofMuggles · 27/07/2007 10:34

Seems we're all flitting between the 2 anyway tho.

Was quite disturbed by 2 deaths in 50 pages. Thought OMG she's going to kill them ALL
But then was ages til another one.

biggitdad · 27/07/2007 21:28

######################################
I have just finished reading the book and thought it an excellent read.
I too thought the last chapter was weak and was anyone else suprised when the book finished? I turned over the page to see what was next and that was it. What a strange last line to a book, almost no conclusion to it.

binklehasflipped · 27/07/2007 21:29

what was the last line?

I always think the last line says a lot about a book

biggitdad · 27/07/2007 21:47

I cannot remember and I have lent it to someone else!

CountTo10 · 27/07/2007 22:10

Loved it. Finally all my questions answered - some I'd got a feeling about others not!!! Cried when Dobby died and then when Harry summoned his dead parents, lupin and sirius and was marching off to his death. I have to say as nice as the last chapter was, I found it very confusing trying to keep up with whose kids were whoseand also thought the last line was weird. Great book though and just now gutted its all over.

unless she does Potter: The Next Generation!!!
