Just getting it ready for tomorrow!

Don't you think its a bit odd that nothing happened to V as the horcruxes where destroyed though? I mean I can understand from the story point of view that he shouldn't find out until near the last one but surely he should have felt something. There didn't seem to be any reaction from V when the Harry Horcrux was destroyed. He didn't even twig that Harry wasn't dead. Surely when Neville destroyed the last Horcrux V should have reacted because he would know that this was it - no coming back now. I do think that was glossed over.

I also found the whole Hallows thing a bit distracting. Considering it was the name of the book, this epic journey to solve the horcrux puzzle and then suddenly something else gets in the way. Maybe that that the point. Isn't that what DD sais - that he got distracted by the hallows but it also broke up the story a bit for me. Would have been good story just with the horcrux.

OK, stupid question time BUT how did Neville get the Gryffinddor sword to kill Nagini? I thought Griphook had it?

Rosylily · 23/07/2007 11:51

Well I suppose the sword was just enchanted and always going to be available to brave gryfindors.

Porpoise · 23/07/2007 12:01

Aha! Thank you Rosylily - that will do for me!

Babe · 23/07/2007 13:11

Sorry to be dim but the baby had woken up and I was on borrowed time reading the ending (BAD mother!).

Please can someone explain the following bit from the end:

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!

When Voldemort tried to kill Harry in the Forest with the Aveda Kedavra curse and Harry shouts Expelliarmus at the same time, how come the wand doesn't rebound on Voldemort then and kill him? Since that's how he dies later on...? I think...

Sorry - bit tired and confused after being up last night reading it, so I'd really appreciate a clear short explanation!

KezzaG · 23/07/2007 13:20

Can i join in?

I loved it all, but did think the first half got slightly tedious with all the near misses.

I was crying my eyes out when his parents came to support him to his death. Anything with his mum really gets me.

Loved the bit where Harry tells his son that SNape was the bravest man he knew, and thought the "not my daughter you bitch" line from Mrs W was great.

JK did good.

Babe, when he went into the forest he tucked his wand into his top as he didnt want to defend himself. That was the crucial point, he has to face death as a sacrifice as his mum did and that is why he gave everyone else protection and was able to come back. It was only in the last fight with LV that he fought back.

Babe · 23/07/2007 13:23

oh thanks KezzaG. So when he shouted Expelliarmus he was trying to use Voldie's wand?

KezzaG · 23/07/2007 13:25

dont remember him shouting it at all actually, did we read the same book

Im not at home to check either, maybe someone else will be able to put us both right.

Babe · 23/07/2007 13:25

Oh just checked - ignore me, he doesn't shout it at all. Must get some sleep.

...Wanders off absentmindedly putting baby in the washing machine...

KezzaG · 23/07/2007 13:27

LOL at x posts, glad I am not going mad, it was a bit of an emotional readathon!!

Loved it! Rereading the first 6 in preparation had made me forget how serious and dramatic it is when you first read the books - I was mainly reminded of the humour in the books.

I think Neville got the sword when the sorting hat was placed on his head - he's a true Gryffindor after all!! I loved that he killed Nagini, the final horcrux. Harry had to finally kill V, but he couldn't have done it without Neville.

I really though Hagrid was a goner, that was awful. And Snape I wasn't surprised at all that he was working for DD, but being a childhood friend of Lily was great. It really got me when I realised why he said "Look at me", he wanted to be looking into Lily's eyes as he died . And Albus Severus stills makes me well up when I think about it.

Loved Ron's new-found suave skills with the ladies (well, Hermione). really made me laugh. And their snog was fab, lifting her off the ground! Disappointed there wasn't more Harry/Ginny action though.

Phew!

PS I didnt realise that about the look into my eyes comment. Now i have a lump in my throat again!

KTWhoMustNotBeNamed · 23/07/2007 14:22

Did anyone feel that this one was different in that it no longer felt like just a children's story?

There were few uses of "bad language" that I don't remember ever being in the other books (Mrs Weasley calling what"s her name a B* and Rons said "effing" at some stage) - ok fairly mild I know... and what happened to Dumbledore's sister - I read it as implying that the 3 Muggles boys had raped her... and that werewolf (greyback?) almost lusting after Hermione....

PhoenixSongbird · 23/07/2007 14:31

Mmnn, the whole Greyback thing is like pedophilia isn't it, he's always prefered to bite children . And I thought that about DD's sister as well, wasn't very nice was it?

suezee · 23/07/2007 14:43

i finished reading at 4.30 this morning.......i probably would have finished a good hour earlier had i not been crying so much......i just love it

KTWhoMustNotBeNamed · 23/07/2007 14:44

I'm hoping all that went over my dd's head... she read it so quickly anyway!

suezee · 23/07/2007 14:48

im actually going to start reading again today because i think i just wanted to know the end so much that i didnt absorb the whole thing in properly,i do think the book would have benefited fom a couple of extra chapters to give the characters closure iyswim

Nettee · 23/07/2007 14:53

I loved it - cried at the last chapter at the station. Did find all the twists a bit hard to follow but then I was reading fast as I wanted to know what what going to happen - will have to read again properly. Proud of myself for predicting that Snape loved Lily. I did think that Malfoy would come through on the good side though and do something amazing - he just turned out to be a bit pathetic. Lots of the characters we knew well from before had to have such small parts because there are so many of them now. (Luna, Neville, Lupin, Umbridge, the Dursleys.....) Thought the House elves were great too. Only down side was that endless camping and arguing towards the beginning - I suppose it would have been frustrating and boring for H, H and R but that bit could have been cut for definate.

MrsBumblebee · 23/07/2007 15:02

Loved book, but agree that the last chapter was a bit obvious and over-explained. Though I guess we never found out what job Harry or Ginny are doing (is there any more Auror-ing to be done, now that Voldemort is dead)?

One question - are we meant to assume that Victoire (described as James, Albus and Lily's cousin) is Bill and Fleur's daughter, because of the French name?? Also, I was a bit taken aback for a minute because I thought Victoire was a boy's name, even in French - I thought this was the HP big gay moment !!

dustyFawkes · 23/07/2007 15:05

It ended how I figured it would but i was a bit disappointed. I had hoped that there would be more of a twist at the end.

suezee · 23/07/2007 15:05

was anybody proud of kreacher???????i loved him in the end..and it was kind of obvious that snape lilly, well i thought so anyway.i was so sad about dobby, and poor lupin and tonks.........i never thought any of he weasleys would go

I thought the same about Victoire MrsBumblebee!

Also, wouldn't it have been great to have a spectacular Lupin V Greyback werewolf showdown?

Would have been pretty cool I reckon..

DobbyMOO · 23/07/2007 17:53

Couldn't cry as I was at the park where I'd taken the children so I'd get a chance to finish it

I really loved all of it apart from the last chapter which was borrrrring - dunno what it says about me that I'd rather know what careers they'd chosen than about their kids

I did read the last few chapters thinking "blimey, this is going to be reeeally expensive to film"
