Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

What a fabulous book. Unexpected, moving, gripping...it's about an isolated young woman in her early 30s. She's had a terrible trauma earlier in life and now lives a weird sort of half-life.

The book grabs you straight away as you wish for Eleanor to see the people around her who offer hope. Her life begins to change and it's so lovely to see.

I would also recommend Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine.

Have you read any Jon McGregor? He has an unusual style, which I love. "If nobody speaks of remarkable things" is a good start, but I can also recommend "Reservoir 13".

He is the king of understatement and depicting the minutae of daily life in a way which simultaneously captures the importance to the individual and the lack of importance to everyone else! I've only read the two o mention so far, but both have stuck with me long after reading and I love their quiet simplicity.

Also have you read "God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy? Possibly my favourite book and beautifully written.

There's a scene where the family are all in the car, I think going to the cinema and I can picture is so vividly (even a few years after reading the book) that I feel I can almost smell it! It's on my to read list again, i'm planning on it being one of my summer holiday reads.
