What do we think Alfie and Annie Rose are doing now?

(Put this in "grown up" section as I thought it more appropriate than children's books...)

Another sleepless night and I was reminiscing in my head about reading to the dcs and how much we enjoyed Shirley Hughes. And then I wondered how old Alfie and Annie Rose might be and what they would be doing now.

Annie Rose is definitely an actress. Not a Hollywood or even television actress, but a serious stage actress at the Royal Shakespeare Company, I reckon.

Alfie... I'm thinking either a History teacher or civil servant.

They are still close but there has been some friction over who inherits grandma's lovely house in the country with the pig in the next field.

I still think of Alfie and Annie Rise with fondness, they were our bedtime reading for many years, and my two both had blonde hair and were a similar age difference, so they felt very relevant.
Has Bernard gone down the straight and narrow, or is he still a naughty man?
Is Bonting still in a box somewhere, dressed in a tatty piece of fabric, or has he been thrown away?

I think Alfie May be a plumber. I agree that Annie Rose has a flair for the dramatic so maybe an actress or art teacher.
Bernard is probably very attractive and owns an art gallery.

Not sure about Alfie and Annie Ross but Mrs. Macthingys daughter Maureen is definitely in a thrash punk band!

I imagine grown up Alfie as being quite Richard Briers like. Definitely think teacher or maybe an academic, with a couple of teenage kids. Guardian reading, likes growing veg.

Annie-Rose runs an arts-based children’s charity.

Dogger is on a shelf and still gets a little Pat every now and then.

Bonting is in a box underneath Alfie's bed.

Annie Rose has had lots of boyfriends but none of them are good enough!

I adored these books growing up.

I think Alfie is a history teacher or possibly a social worker.

I read lots of Shirley Hughes to my children, we all love her characters.

Alfie is a caring sort of a soul so maybe a dr... Annie Rose definitely a bit more dramatic! Perhaps a musician

And Bernard wasn’t a bad boy really, I think he’s turned out alright. He’s doing something where being unafraid to express his opinions is useful.

Alfie is a primary school teacher with lots of extracurricular responsibilities, and Annie Rose is the artistic director of a small but well regarded regional rep.

Totally agree about Bella being at the A&E coalface. Dave is a lawyer and baby Joe is a freelance percussionist.

Alfie and Bernard were best men at each other’s weddings.

I have that on good authority.

Annie-rose had a tricky time for a bit but Alfie took care of her and they are as close as ever. They all still live in their lovely London suburb and have lovely friends, like in a Richard Curtis movie.

Shirley Hughes has a Twitter account. She doesn't operate it herself but the person who does passes on messages from her. She tweets out pictures from the books and this week it was Dogger. What an outpouring of love and affection and nostalgia from dozens of people!

I hope Maureen is running a very successful plumbing business.

Alfie is a solicitor in a provincial market town. He has a retriever and chickens. His wife teaches in the local primary school.
Annie Rose is a wedding dress designer. She studied textiles, met her partner and lives in north London.. She has a studio in Hampstead and dreams of a rural life but not just yet.
