DS would like help in identifying this YA gothic-style novel please:
The main character is a girl who has fits since she was hit on the head by a stone. She is on the run to / from somewhere with a man who is not 100% trustworthy. The man introduces a boy, and the main immediately recognises him as the boy who threw the stone, so one night she tries to blind him as revenge but fails. At one point she works as a maid in an inn, but has a fit.
Far away, there is a man who has an automaton workshop, and he is experimenting with cutting out birds' hearts and replacing them with clockwork but has no luck because his knife is not sharp enough so he creates a knife that is so sharp the birds don't notice it.
Memory gets a little hazy here, but I think the girl, man and boy reach where they were going only to find everyone in the town has had their hearts replaced with clockwork.
This might be two different books but I think they're the same.
