Which detective next?

I’m currently stuck in hospital, and want distracting by a good detective novel. I love Mark Billingham’s Tom Thorne series, and have just finished Lethal White by Robert Galbraith. I’ve lost track on where I’ve got to on Bosch, Brunetti and Rebus (but suppose I have time to figure it out now!)

Any recommendations on who I should read next?

Have you read Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine,?
Inspector Wexford

HoraceCope · 03/02/2019 09:15

Some people like Peter James, I only read one and wasnt taken but he is popular

Toofaroutallmylife · 03/02/2019 09:40

Thanks - I’ve read a few Barbara Vine / Wexford novels but wasn’t very keen.

I just got excited when I saw there was a new Jackson Brodie from Kate Atkinson, but then realised it’s not released until June!

Quintin Jardine's Bob Skinner series. It is told from the point of view of a senior police officer in Edinburgh and his team.

The Peter Beck series by Maj Sjowall & Per Wahloo?

I'm not usually one for detective stuff but I did like these very much. I do think it's quite important to start with the first one and work through in the right order though, it's a definite series rather than a lot of completely self contained novels

Toofaroutallmylife · 03/02/2019 15:57

Thank you! I hadn’t heard of either of those series so will have a look

Do you like historical mysteries? If so I can recommend the Shardlake series by C J Samson

Toofaroutallmylife · 03/02/2019 16:11

Thanks - I never took to Shardlake but DH loves them

Have you tried DI callanach series by Helen Field? Really good. Also not strictly Detective, but the Freida Klein series by Nicci French are fab.

GreenShadow · 03/02/2019 16:19

Myuser. O was also just about yo recommend the Nicci French series.

I also like Sophie Hannah's Spilling detective books.

Kilash · 03/02/2019 16:20

Anne Cleeves? Vera or Shetland series?

JuniLoolaPalooza · 03/02/2019 16:20

Have you tried the Inspector Ryan series by LJ Ross? If you have a kindle you can often borrow them for free. They're not quite up there with Rebus but are good enough and strangely addictive! My friend got me hooked by asking me to think about which actor would play Ryan should they get adapted.

VWpurse · 03/02/2019 16:21

I’ve lost track of Bosch too and I was doing so well! We ought to work it out.

tobee · 03/02/2019 16:26

Try Adrian McKinty detective Sean Duffy, Louise Penny Inspector Gamache, M R Hall (sometimes Matthew Hall) The Coroner series(not strictly a detective) and maybe Susie Steiner Manon Bradshaw books.

CamberGirl · 03/02/2019 16:27

Wesley Patterson series by Kate Ellis. Brilliant stuff.

Veterinari · 03/02/2019 16:30

Stuart macbride’s Ash Henderson series or Logan MacRae series. Both excellent

I find LJ Ross’s Books rather twee.

mrsdolittle · 03/02/2019 16:31

Another vote for Nicci French - Freida Klein series.

Also how about Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books?

cdtaylornats · 03/02/2019 16:32

I can recommend the Bosch TV series

Annasgirl · 03/02/2019 16:32

I love the Yrsa Sigurdatottir series on Thora (can't find her surname)

A female detective in Iceland - really addictive page turners

Last Rituals
My soul to take
Ashes to Dust
The day is dark
The silence of the sea

Myusernameismud · 03/02/2019 20:19

tobee ooh I'd forgotten about the Manon Bradshaw books, is there a 3rd yet?

Steamfan · 03/02/2019 20:24

The Berlin Noir books by Philip Kerr

DuggeesWoggle · 03/02/2019 20:30

The Harry Hole novels by Jo Nesbo are great - set in Oslo (although some take place elsewhere) and are very absorbing. Start with The Snowman (so much better than the dire film) and go from there.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/02/2019 20:32

Camilla Lackburg has a Swedish series that I'm really enjoying, the last one I read was pretty 'startling' though (The Ice Child).

borntobequiet · 03/02/2019 20:35

For an American female PI twist, try the alphabet series by Sue Grafton (sadly died in 2017 before finishing Z).

ElfrideSwancourt · 03/02/2019 20:37

Another vote for Stuart McBride's Logan McCrae and Frieda Klein by Nicci French.
