Which detective next?

I’m currently stuck in hospital, and want distracting by a good detective novel. I love Mark Billingham’s Tom Thorne series, and have just finished Lethal White by Robert Galbraith. I’ve lost track on where I’ve got to on Bosch, Brunetti and Rebus (but suppose I have time to figure it out now!)

Any recommendations on who I should read next?

OP posts:

I liked the new Poirot books by Sophie Hannah!!

CannyLad · 03/02/2019 20:41

I just finished the snowman and not being rude to pp, but wtaf?!? Did I miss something? Utter drivel. I worked it out immediately, and that never happens! That and talking about a ladies sex being open (facepalm). Maybe it's better in the Norwegian?

Christopher Brookmyre OP, love his work!

tobee · 03/02/2019 20:53

LadyDeadpool · 03/02/2019 21:10

Archie Sheriden - Chelsea Cain he's a detective who has a seriously messed up relationship with a female serial killer. Excellent books.

FeedMeBooks · 03/02/2019 21:14

I love the VI Warshawski books.
Also the Kate Shugak mysteries set in Alaska.

sproutsandparsnips · 03/02/2019 21:14

Peter Robinson DCI Banks

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 03/02/2019 21:17

The Follow by Paul Grzegorzek.

Or any of his crime novels, they are all good.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/02/2019 21:26

Can't believe no-one has suggested Anne Cleeves. She wrote both the Vera and Shetland series.

Second Jo Nesbo. Also Peter May. His Lewis trilogy is brilliant

noodlezoodle · 03/02/2019 22:20

Another vote for the Manon Bradshaw books by Susie Steiner - there are currently only two, new one not out til next year.

I also love the VI Warshawski books, by Sara Paretsky - all about a woman PI, set in Chicago - there are loads of them and I've really enjoyed them for years.

My absolute favourites are Dalziel and Pascoe by Reginald Hill - a beautifully written series.

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 03/02/2019 22:27

Virgil Flowers series by John Sandford. A fishing fanatic and off the wall detective working out of the police department in Minneapolis. Easy reading and good stories.

Hazlenutpie · 03/02/2019 22:32

I like Peter James, DI Grace books and Faith Martin DI Hillary Green.

AdaColeman · 03/02/2019 22:52

Michael Ridpath ~ Magnus Jonson series set in Iceland, interwoven with complex family history. Where the Shadows Lie is book one.

Tana French ~ Dublin Detective series, starts with In the Woods (though not my favourite it got rave reviews).

Stieg Larsson ~ Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first book, fantastic stuff!

AdaColeman · 03/02/2019 22:52

Thanks Get well soon!

hystericaluterus · 03/02/2019 22:55

Nothing to add, but following with interest!

PerkingFaintly · 03/02/2019 22:57

Although maybe better avoided if it hurts when you laugh...

Slightlyjaded · 03/02/2019 23:06

Love Jackson Brodie

And another vote for 5he Sophie Hannah / Culver Valley series.

Skinandbones · 03/02/2019 23:15

Try Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone they are set around San Francisco and a favourite, and if you like them there are loads to get through. Also Val Mcdermid Karen Pirie are good ones too.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 03/02/2019 23:56

I also was going to suggest Tana French, really enjoyed her books.

The Kinsey Milhone alphabet series by Sue Grafton are very good. Set in the 80s so proper old fashioned gum shoe detective. And not remotely murder porny.

I have a soft spot for the Jack Reacher series. I couldn't tell you a single plot, but they are great to pass the time.

Hope you're well soon, OP.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 04/02/2019 00:16

PJ Tracey is worth a try, I enjoy her books. Also Alison Taylor’s series which starts with Simeon’s Bride.

If you like female PIs along the lines of Sue Grafton, Sara Paretsky and Dana Stabenow (I second the recommendations for all of them), you could also try Jan Burke, Janet Dawson and Nevada Barr. Jan Burke’s “Bones”, is a seriously scary serial killer book.

A much underrated writer who isn’t anywhere near as popular as she should be, is Carol O’Connell. Her Kathy Mallory series are beautifully written and a little strange. I really recommend her.

If you are happy to veer a bit more to the thriller side, Zoe Sharp’s Charlie Fox series are edge-of-your-seat stuff with an absolute badass female character.

I also love John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series, but they are very dark with a supernatural element. Engrossing and often very funny dialogue.

And one more favourite, Peter Temple’s Jack Irish series, set in Melbourne, Australia. He’s a wonderful writer.

LoniceraJaponica · 04/02/2019 00:17

If you want something light hearted I recommend The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith.

Lucylugs · 04/02/2019 01:19

If you like Val McDiarmuid you might also like Aline Templeton. First few books are about DI Marjory Fleming set in Scotland. I really enjoyed them.

moredoll · 04/02/2019 01:26

It's not a series but if you haven't read it 'The Daughter of Time' by Josephine Tey.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 04/02/2019 02:18

And since you’re in hospital,it just occurred to me to suggest Eileen Dreyer’s mysteries, set in and around hospitals. Excellent and frequently very funny.

WaterBird · 04/02/2019 03:05

I'm not usually much of a mystery reader, but I really enjoyed the Andee Lawrence books by Susan Lewis, the first of which is Behind Closed Doors. Andee and her story are very prevalent throughout, although Lewis also mixes in lots of other subplots.
Hope you feel better soon.
