Come Back Grandma, by Sue Limb. It's a children's book, but made me cry so much I could never read out loud to my daughters! So sweet.

I stay away from specifically sad books but these made me cry bouquets:
The Amber Spyglass
Time Traveller's Wife
Ghormenghast

Family by Susan Hill
Synopsis (from Amazon):
"This is a story of the birth, at 24-and-a-half weeks, of Susan Hill's second daughter, the traumatic time in the SCB unit at the John Ratcliffe Hospital in Oxford, and her death. The book ends with the birth, one year later, of her daughter, Clemency."
Not recommended when you are pregnant or ttc or probably at any other time after you have had children.

Birdsong

Captain Corelli's Mandolin - I was reading the final chapters on the tube in floods. Everyone looked at me weirdly, then saw what I was reading and gave me understanding nods.... I had to miss my stop to finish it. I've never been able to bring myself to watch the movie as I understand it's a travesty.

Many have made me cry - for the time I wasted trying to read them.

McDreamy · 10/07/2007 12:35

Yes that's the one - truly a great book. I would challenge anyone to read the synopsis on the back and not want to read it.

LaBoheme · 10/07/2007 12:37

Seieze the day - John Cheever

LaBoheme · 10/07/2007 12:40
