Liars Paradox- How could you raise children in this situation?

I just finished reading Liars Paradox, I'll try not to spoil it in case you read it, but it brought up so many parenting questions for me! How do you raise kids that can survive extreme adversity? Is it ever problematic to be so warm, nurturing and protective that kids don't realise the need to be smart and learn how to stay safe and survive? Is it better to live in fear for a long time, or be loved for a short time? Can you have both? It's a really complex fascinating story and I still can't make my mind up about what I would do in that mothers situation.. not that we can ever know, but I can't even find a 'right' way. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Do you have Netflix OP? Birdbox stars Sandra Bullock and her character has to answer those very questions. (Hope that's not a spoiler)

I’m going to guess that this is a post apocalyptic type scenario?
I can’t read or watch the style of thing as it gives me the horrors too badly and starts awakening my inner preppier, but I do think it’s a really interesting question.
I think history shows us that nice people are often first against the wall, but I shouldn’t like to toughen my kids up so much that they were the ones holding the guns.
Gender roles come into this too, I’m quite concious that we condition girls to be ‘nice’ and I’m struggling with how to balance that against ‘assertive’.
