Book Recommendations for 5 -12 year olds

Hi, I have all the grand kiddos next week for a night, they are 5 / 6 / 10 and 12. We usually divide and conquer them into 2 groups, but I was looking for a book I can read out loud that will keep the youngest occupied, whist not boring the older 2.

Any ideas?

Matt Haig A Boy Called Christmas. There are three in the series but you have to read them in order. We've all really enjoyed them as a family including DS1 14 who probably wouldn't admit it

Something by David Walliams? Funny books often go down well for a wider age group

Walliams will appeal to all thsoe age groups

The Accidental Prime Minister might appeal to them- boy has a rant at the PM, it goes viral and he ends up becoming PM.

If the oldest were slightly younger I would suggest 'The book with no pictures' - the oldest might still appreciate it but it depends on the humour.

I love that you still read stories to the 11 and 12 year olds. I read to my 11 y.o. DD but I do sometimes think it is a bit unusual to still do this. Don't get me wrong, I plan to continue until she asks me to stop!

Mr Gum books are good for 5/6+ year olds, as are the earlier David Walliams. They're quite funny so the older ones may enjoy them too as a one off.
Harry Potter would work for all those ages, as would the Crestomanci series.
Older books like The Borrower's, Treasure Island etc would work as they were originally meant for younger readers but the writing style is advanced enough for the older ones. Noel Streatfield as well (aimed more at girls generally, if it matters to you, but Thursdays Child works for both). Hope this is helpful.
