Reread the half blood prince last night

Is there ANY chance, do we think, that DD MIGHT be evil, imperiused etc. Quite possibly he has surrendered for good reasons but...

Am trying to reconcile the following

The "gleam" in the eye re harry's blood

The fact that he makes harry obtain slughorn's memory. That is reminding me of the behaviour of Voldemort/ Tom Riddle.

And the ring. WHY is he wearing the ring of Slytherin?

Given that JKRs trademark is the Chechovian gun (ie dropping stuff in quite casually which then becomes VERY important), I am musing on this

The quest for the horcruxes is also interesting to me in that light.

Now I know we don't WANT this to be the case but...

BecklePhoenixBird · 09/07/2007 14:35

Ooooohhh...

fillyjonk · 09/07/2007 14:41

ok here is the prob with dudley (or anyone else) discovering magic.

why would be then not be at hogwarts? it is COMMON for young wizards not to be aware of their magicness, no?

am thinking of line of nevilles though in philosophers stone re them being worried he was not magic enough

feck me i CANNOT WAIT for this one.

fillyjonk · 09/07/2007 14:42

dudley is same school year as harry, yes? no, he must be, they go to secondary at same time.

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 09/07/2007 15:03

I believe Dudley is a few months older as Petunia mentions it when DD says Harry is due to come of age the following July in HBP.

fillyjonk · 09/07/2007 15:05

so dudley would have got the letter at the same time as harry?

ok, are harry's mother's parents magic or not? do we know?

if so, and we know petunia ISN't a squib, she MUST be a witch.

fillyjonk · 09/07/2007 15:09

nope lily's parents are muggles

so WHAT is petunia?

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 09/07/2007 15:23

Maybe Petunia is just a muggle and her secret is something entirely different?

persephonesnape · 09/07/2007 15:43

maybe she's keeping a secret for someone else... like Lily...

Nightynight · 09/07/2007 15:54

ooh I love the idea of Petunia as a witch, who deliberately rejected her place at Hogwarts, and married the muggliest man she could find, and has spent her life trying to be a muggle!
Dursley def not magic though.

kate100 · 09/07/2007 15:55

I still think Petunia's a witch and I was thinking of Neville when I thought that Dudley would be the one to do magic, especially as he has been exposed to mkagic now and has seen that it can do good, to save him from the Dementors.

I find these theories about Snape being in love with anyone hard to understand as I see him as almost asexual, with no interest in either sex at all, I maybe wrong and probably am, I'm not very good at all this guessing stuff.

DH has been teasing me about my HP obsession and then he suggests making a list of all the things we think will happen and then compare it to the book when it's finished! Obssessed too I think

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 09/07/2007 16:01

If she was a witch wouldn't she be unable to stop things happening when she gets cross (a la Harry at the snake house) - and she gets cross a lot? I really think she's someone who has had a great, unfulfilled love - it's that uptight thing of someone who's been really disappointed in life. Then the way she talks about whoever told Lily about Azkaban (it's never clarified who it was) as 'that boy' seems important to me.

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 09/07/2007 16:01

Sorry 'that awful boy'.

MrsWeasley · 09/07/2007 16:02

DD evil

Nightynight · 09/07/2007 16:12

yes, thats a good point Albus [disappointed]
OK then, maybe she was really jealous of Lily, sneaking round after her to find out stuff about magic, and in love with one of Lily's admirers?

kate100 · 09/07/2007 16:16

DUMBLEDORE IS NOT EVIL I will not entertain the possibility!

Snape has to be a good guy otherwise DD was wrong to trust him and he would have been a fool and DD is no fool.

AlbusPercivalWulfricBrianSun · 09/07/2007 16:17

She was definitely jealous of Lily. Also remember the way Slughorn describes her as someone everyone would think was special - brave, funny etc. I can imagine her being surrounded by a gaggle of men and Petunia being jealous of this as much as about the magic. Also, there's no mention of James' friends having any love interests until Tonks, so I wonder if Lily was the dominant female in their group, thus attracting more jealousy from Petunia. I definitely think she was in love with one of them, whether it was James, Snape or Sirius I don't know.

kate100 · 09/07/2007 16:20

Would Petunia have met any of them? Hermione never takes anyone home as she lives at Ron's in the holidays, so maybe James would have been the only person Lily would have taken home as he was her husband.

persephonesnape · 09/07/2007 16:38

but petunia may not have met 'that awful boy' at her house! could have been anywhere...

MrsWeasley · 09/07/2007 18:14

The Weasleys and Graingers have all met (picking up kids, shopping etc) so it is possible that the Evans family met with other wizarding folk whilst dropping Lily off or shopping with her.

LaDiDaDi · 09/07/2007 18:29

It crossed my mind that Dumbledore may be evil when I readthat bit about the gleam in his eye but I couldn't reconcile that with him saving Harry on the top of the tower. If he was evil would he not have let Harry be killed then?

This part of the book convinced me of Snape being good, he must have seen the two brooms and realised that Harry was there under his Invisibility cloak.

I know it's been said before that Harry is not a horcrux but I wondered if the gleam in Dumbledore's eye meant that he was, as if Voldemort had gained more from Harry's blood because of this??

I definitely think that Harry will die, esp after seeing the posters for the new film that say "only one can survive" on the poster of harry and Voldemort.

LazyLine · 09/07/2007 18:30

Kate I think you are right about Snape. That is the way that JKR sees him and portrays him. She has implied as much in interviews.

fillyjonk · 09/07/2007 18:33

Am toying with idea that he is under some sort of imperius curse but his magic is strong enough for him to throw it off sometimes.

I can't reconcile it with JKRs story telling style as we know it though. BUT we possibly don't know enough about THAT either, since we haven't seen book 7.

These things will be significant, in the same way that herminone finding the clipping about eileen prince in THBP was. JKR drops these inexplicable, seemingly irrelevant or random things into her narrative but they do normally turn out to be significant.

For example, I mean, we KNOW that the locket in Grimmauld Place is the horcrux, don't we? We've covered that, somewhere, surely?

MrsWeasley · 09/07/2007 18:35

I think that part of killing V or destroying one of his horcrux will involve V's blood now that he has Harry's blood too this little problem is solved. This could be the reason DD had a gleam in his eye?

Thinking aloud really!

fillyjonk · 09/07/2007 18:44

ah an ingenius idea

i do like that
