Hope there aren't now about 10 of these cos we've all opened at the same time.

OP posts:

The US versions have pictures with the start of each chapter aswell. I had the first 4 when I lived there, but gave them to my friend as books are so heavy and wanted to buy the UK versions as US books annoy me with their spelling. Wish I'd kept them now tho for the pictures.

Yes I wondered if that might be the amphitheatre type room descibed in the Ministry of magic, where the veil is, with the steps leading down to the central area. In which case my theory that Sirius may still be reachable for Harry could work!

Also I liked that interview snippet about Lily - it sounds like perhaps Voldermort gave her a choice - live and join him instead of dying maybe?

I must admit I'm not convinced by the "Snape is Harry's father" stuff - think it would be a bit too cliched but wonder if Tom Riddle maybe met Lily at any point and was attracted to her? If he's the same age as Hagrid, how much older than James, Lily, Lupin and Sirius would he be?

Also, I've been wondering if Hepzibah (sp?) Smith - the old woman who has Slytherin's locket and Hufflepuff's cup and is killed by Tom Riddle, might be a descendant of Zacharias Smith, the Hufflepuff chaser - although I can't work out why this may be important, even if he is!

I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rosmerta · 04/07/2007 21:10

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the stuff on Lily, one of the other prediction questions was 'Was Lily studying love at the MoM?'. I think love and the ability to love is going to be a big part of it, as DD said its one thing V doesn't understand so he hates it.

LazyLine · 04/07/2007 21:30

I think that Riddle may have been at school with McGonagall.

Waits to be corrected.

janeite · 04/07/2007 21:31

You're right! I've just found the timeline on "The Leaky Cauldron" - doh - Janeite catches up with the rest of the world at last!

LazyLine · 04/07/2007 21:33

Have checked the Lexicon and they are about the same age.

persephonesnape · 05/07/2007 07:51

i thought he was much younger. wasn't he at school with hagrid? is hagrid about the same age as mcgonnangle?

minerva had a hard life.

LazyLine · 05/07/2007 08:07

It is reckoned that Hagrid was born in the winter of 1928, having him start Hogwarts in 1940.

There are not exact dates from Minerva but think we are looking at a birth date of winter 1925 and a Hogwarts start of 1937.

Tom's dates seem a little confused. The Lexicon lists him as being born in both 1926 and 1927 (winter) but says that he started Howarts in 1938, so I would assume his birth year would be 1926.

So this would place him in the year behind McGonagall.

There seems to be a generation between these lot and the Snape lot as there is an Avery listed as Riddle's contemporary ad as Snapes, so one would assume that they are father and son.

BandofMuggles · 05/07/2007 08:17

It was 50 years ago cos he was at school when the CoS was opened, and he was 16 then as he was a prefect/Head Boy. So he is now about 56.

Not sure about the veil room thing as it is underground, and it looks like sky on the picture.

BandofMuggles · 05/07/2007 08:18

I haven't looked at the time line but surely that is correct acc to the books???

kate100 · 05/07/2007 08:28

Wow!! I go on holiday and look what happens! You have talked a lot while I've been away, it's taken me three days to cathch up on everything that you have written and to look at all the links that you have posted to, I'm going to explore the JKR website later today after the cheats you posted. I cannot wait anylonger, yesterday I looked on the Kerry airport websire to see of they had a book shop and then considered ringing to ask. I'm also considereing hiring a car so that we can stop off and get books on the way to the airport instead of getting a taxi obsessed? Moi?

There is one thing I can't puzzle out, how old are Arthur and Molly Weasley? Are they older or younger then the Potters? I always got the impression they were older, but if they were why weren't they in the Order the forst time around? Can anyone help me?

LazyLine · 05/07/2007 08:48

Well there are not specific dates for Molly and Arthur, but Bill was born in roughly 1970, so it is reckoned that they eloped in about '68 so this put them starting Hogwarts sometime close to the early 60's so I guess that they would have just left as the Marauders were starting.

I'm not sure about the Order stuff. what are the dates of the first lot? It says that Molly and Arthur were in only in the second incarnation.

Who was in the first?

As an aside, research has led me to my favourite Potter word:

Am currently trying to decide between "Mugwump" and "Dunderheads"

rosmerta · 05/07/2007 09:02

According to HP lexicon, Arthur & Molly eloped in 1969, Bill was born in 1970 and Charlie in 1972 so am guessing they weren't involved in the OotP because of the young children?

Also JK tells us that in Book 7 we will become better acquainted with another member of the Order of the Phoenix. This is someone we know about but have not "met properly."

kate100 · 05/07/2007 09:04

Hmm, have just realised that having 5 small chikldren is probably a bit of a hindrance to dark wizard catching

MrsWeasley · 05/07/2007 09:13

probably a slight hindrance yes although knowing Mrs Weasley she would have done the job justice.

MrsWeasley · 05/07/2007 09:14

thats the "real" mrs W not any other wannabes.

AnnieAlcoholLeft · 05/07/2007 09:26

MrsWeasley, coffee and croissants...

Kate100, as a regular visitor to LeprechaunLand, there is only a very small shop at Kerry airport, enough to fit about four people in it, they sell water, some necklaces and black pudding. You will be very lucky if they have room for more than one copy of the book, if any.

MrsWeasley · 05/07/2007 09:35

Thanks you Annie, just what I needed do help yourself too

Perhaps as a house elf yourself could you let me know if kreacher is on the cover of the new book? I have read he plays a part in the final battle but I would love Dobby to be the hero really!

I wasn't too keen(big understatement!!) on kreacher in the books and now I've seen his picture from the film I cant say I have warmed to him at all!

AnnieAlcoholLeft · 05/07/2007 10:19

MrsWeasley, Kreacher is BAD elf. He needs his ear ironing. I is not knowing if he is showing off on cover of book. Dobby never mentioned if he was doing it, but he had many butterbeers that day I met him...

MrsWeasley · 05/07/2007 10:57

LOL
you've brightened my day

but then again I'm easily pleased!!

rosmerta · 05/07/2007 11:08

I'd prefer it to be Dobby too MrsW

rosmerta · 05/07/2007 11:17

Though Harry could force Kreacher to fight on their side...

But I don't think he would because he just doesn't like him!

MrsWeasley · 05/07/2007 12:37

I know but I read that they werent going to put Kreacher in the films and JKRowling said they should otherwise they would be in trouble in the later films! ohh so exciting!

kate100 · 05/07/2007 13:21

Thanks Annie, will definitely be hiring a car and passing on the black pudding I thought that would be the case if Galway International airport was anything to go by, the conveyor belt at my local Sainsburys is longer then the one on baggage reclaim there.

I'm sure it's Dobby on the cover, it has to be, he's such an important part of the books and always comes to Harry's rescue, Chamber of Secrets and the gillyweed and I know there's more but can't think of the top of my head.
