Just finished it, and found it so disappointing. I've enjoyed her other books, and expected this one to be really special as it was short listed for the Booker Prize. If it hadn't featured a harrowing murder, it would have been a teen novel. I know thriller mysteries have improbabilities, but the coincidences and motives were too unbelievable by far. Such a disappointment.

I agree. I did enjoy it but I couldn’t see why it would be on the Booker longlist. There were too many coincidences and the scenario re the dad I found pretty unconvincing. A good enough read but nothing special.

I actually enjoyed reading it but was really ridiculous some of the coincidences!!

And the whole scenario of elaborately setting up a mock family house on the off chance that the Goldilocks burglar would break in!

I thought the same, I have loved her other books but this was nothing like what she usually writes. Basic storyline, basic writing. A bit daft. Really disappointing. Was astounded to see it was shortlisted for booker prize!

I gave up after a few chapters as I couldn't keep up with the story and the kids voices were unconvincing. It wouldn't have been Booker longlisted if it wasn't for Val McDermid who shares the same agent as Belinda.

In the middle of it and can't get beyond
That at the moment 😊
