How do people find book groups? I've asked around, in my local library etc. Any other ideas?

Where do you live? Someone on here may know of one near you...

lilibet · 19/06/2007 08:20

What about starting one?

hotcrossbunny · 19/06/2007 14:12

I'm near Godalming. I am considering starting one - what is the etiquette? I'd quite like it to be with people of a similar age to me, preferably parents too so we have a point of reference, but would that be viewed as discrimination if I put that in an ad?!

They might have one attached to the local bookshop?

I started one a few years back and with a couple of changes we are all going strong.

I got together with a mate and we each thought of a few people and asked them.

We vary in age from 30's to 50's and have single divorced and widowed, with and without children, so we are a pretty mixed bunch.

Our main stipulation was having people of similar intelligence, we take it in turns to recommend three books and the rest of the group pick one. To have one of you recommending 'chick lit' and the rest going for Dickens and Austen will never work!

oh we started one recently through putting an add on mumsnet and we are currently 5 members having met 4 times. We are a group of 5 (though seeking a new member which is why I came on today!) in North Herts. It seems quite easy - an ad on mumsnet, a daytiome cafe meet for saftey to cehck each other out then agree first place to meet and first book! I'm happy to advise though in no way an expert. We are getting on well with some great discussions

I hadn't thought of mumsnet! Good idea about first meet up in a coffee shop... Also good point about similar intellect. I guess that would make all the difference. I'll pop in to our bookshop this week and ask if they know of any existing groups looking for new members. I'll let you know how I get on ans any advice is always very gratefully received! Thank you

And the thing I like best about my book group is that we have no schools in common so completely free of playground gossip etc - bliss!

littlerach · 20/06/2007 10:30

Our library advertises them.

PandaG · 20/06/2007 10:30

I set one up 3 years ago. just asked friends who I though might be interested, and then some of them knew other people who were interested too. We have a mixed bunch, and read a wide range of books. I really enjoy it.

yes ours is brilliant and the great thing is meeting different people who you simply wouldn't otherwise come across
