.....I'm really struggling to stay interested.

I'm halfway through and, to me, it's just dull.

KA has always been my favourite author and I've LOVED her previous offerings.

So disappointed.

If you've read it, I'd love to know what happens as I don't think I'll finish it.

I would probably largely agree with you... loved the writing (it was evocative, following the style of the era) and found it reasonably enthralling and then it went off for me once it left the period of WW2. I thought at some levels it felt quite self-satisfied. But the writing was, as ever, excellent

Absolutely agree trip re the writing and about the sense of it being self-satisfied.

I think her next book is going to be another Jackson Brodie affair, which I love.

I haven't given up on KA yet!

Ah, @baconAndAvocado I wouldn't want to give up on KA and I felt so GUILTY thinking that it was a little smug, she being such an icon of the writing establishment. Would be happy to read another book of hers.. I think you are right, the next one is a JB... here's to happy reading!

trip if you haven't read Behind the Scenes at the Museum by KA, I fully recommend.

Quintessential, quality KA.

I also LOVE Kate Atkinson, but was disappointed by this one. There were some glimpses of the humorous detail that she excels in, but I found it quite dull. And the ending was predictable I thought!

I’m going to re-read A God in Ruins now, just to remind myself how good she is...

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 08/11/2018 22:14

It's not her best, very slight, although the writing is wonderful as always. But so hard to match Life After Life and A God In Ruins.
