I am looking for a new book to read. I am a big Harry Potter fan so loved them books, I have also read Twilght and the Hunger Games. I am finding it hard to get in to anything new. I loved the ones I have read so far and find myself comparing everything to them.

Any recommendations? I'm not in to biographies or true stories. I like books that get my imagination going.

There’s a series books by a writer RL King about a modern wizard, Alistair Stone. I think they might only be available as ebooks, but could be wrong. They are not great literature, but very engaging stories which are great for train trips and the like. She’s not a sublime writer, but is a good, natural storyteller.

Maureen Johnson’s Shades of London series is excellent, about a young American woman going to boarding school in London and coming up against the ghost of Jack the Ripper.

I’ll be the first (in the thread) to recommend Ben Aaronivitch’s Rivers of London series. And the Chronicles of St Mary’s, which I discovered via MN.

Things I've read and/or been recommended by other Mumsnetters - who always suggest good stuff - Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke; The Eyre Affair first in a series by Jasper Fforde; and Christopher Fowler's 'Bryant and May' series - all would fit into the kind of book that an adult 'Potter' fan might like.

Have you read Northern Lights - His Dark Materials? It’s a children’s book like Harry Potter but I’ve come enjoyed reading it recently.
