Inspired by a thread on here yesterday (if you saw it, you'll know exactly which one I mean), I'm feeling the urge to read about fantasists ~ any suggestions? Googling 'novels about fantasists' and 'delusional disorder' haven't been very fruitful Sad [paragraph return not working grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr] So, anyone read anything that might fit the bill and that they'd recommend?

I've recently read Falling by Elizabeth Jane Howard. One of the main characters is a dangerous fantasist/sociopath.

Thank you, that looks great ~ just ordered a copy Smile

Lie with me by Sabine Durrant
I think liz nugents latest book too has a sociopath as the main character- skin deep

buttybuttybutthole · 24/09/2018 22:13

What about also, we need to talk about Kevin Grin

MsWinters · 24/09/2018 22:14

Morgan's Passing by Anne Tyler. If I'm remembering it correctly - read it (and loved it) about 20 years ago.

bellabelly · 24/09/2018 22:16

Oh yes - Morgan's Passing is wonderful. (As is anything by Anne Tyler.)

buttybuttybutthole · 24/09/2018 22:16

The collector by John Fowles? Maybe big what you're looking for though

Can you tell I have a sick tastes Grin

bellabelly · 24/09/2018 22:18

I recently read a book called [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/Behind-Her-Eyes-psychological-thriller/dp/0008131996/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=behind+her+eyes&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1537823819&sr=8-1 Behind Her Eyes]] which I would recommend to anyone.

Gone Girl?

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 24/09/2018 23:53

Lie with me by Sabine Durrant I think I've already read that one (finds a body while jogging, is that the one), but I'll have a look at the Liz Nugent one, thanks Smile And thank you to everyone for all of the other suggestions too, I'll check them all out Gone Girl? I've already read that ~ was hooked for approx 3/4 of it, then got the ABSOLUTE RED RAGE over the last bit (it was the toilet thing that tipped me over the edge! Grin )

Lie with me is a different book although I have read the one you're talking about you! Lie with me I think would be what you are looking for!

macnab · 25/09/2018 14:39

Definitely "Skin Deep" by Liz Nugent. And also by the same author, "Unravelling Oliver" - both are excellent books. She must have personal experience of these sorts of characters to be able to write about it so... believeably!

Andtheresaw · 25/09/2018 14:42

American Psycho.

Secretlifeofme · 25/09/2018 14:46

There's one called 'Going Wrong' by Ruth Rendell that's very good.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 25/09/2018 14:46

Billy Liar by Keith Waterhouse. Also a good film.

PawneeParksDept · 25/09/2018 15:45

Tampa by Alyssa Nutting
Enduring Love by Ian McEwan
Notes On A Scandal by Zoe Heller
Alys, Always and Her by Harriet Lane
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Cornishblues · 25/09/2018 20:21

Engleby by Sebastian faulks?

HopeClearwater · 26/09/2018 23:08

Beaten to it by pp but came on here to suggest both Engleby and Billy Liar.

Annandale · 26/09/2018 23:12

Bloody hell, came on here smugly to recommend Falling and find im way behind the curve Grin

If you want to be scared out of your wits read the chapter in the biography of Elizabeth Jane Howard (not her autobiography) about the man she based the story on. I have never read anything so terrifying, literally screamed and dropped the book at one point and it's never left my head.

CramptonHodnet · 27/09/2018 18:40

Thoight of one more - Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty.

CramptonHodnet · 27/09/2018 18:40
  • Thought ...
HopeClearwater · 27/09/2018 20:32

Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty

She’s a fantasist?

Maybe I didn’t understand it then. Terrible book

CramptonHodnet · 27/09/2018 22:53

No, not her. The man. So long since I read it, but iirc he made up a lot about himself and his job. He wasn't who or what he said he was. She was genuine, and taken in by him.
