Read the book some years ago and loved it. Gave it away just a few weeks ago. Today I watched the dvd and was mystified as after the introduction of how the society came about and how she received the first letter from a member I was in a different realm to the book I remember. The book as I remember it was formed in the main through letters written to the writer by the members of the society. It was a wonderful insight into the hardships suffered by the inhabitants of Guernsey and the Germans themselves who were also hungry. My problem is that I have no memory of the disappearance of Elizabeth or anything about Kit. In the book the writer went to Guernsy after the War when by then she really felt she knew all the members of the society. I don’t recall a fiancé and she married the farmer..happy ending. Has time erased a whole chunk from my memory or did the film makers just use the spirit of the book and create a rewritten story? I am puzzled. Can someone help please?

No idea, but I watched the film this afternoon and really enjoyed it. I'm off to start the book this evening Smile

I read the book just before the movie was released.

Time has indeed erased a humongous chunk from your memory, OP sorry. Grin

Thanks Butchy. Was the story of Elizabeth told within the letters and not in the same way as in the film? If so perhaps that was why it wasn’t remembered. (Here’s hoping!!). If I get a chance I must get the book back and read it again.

Professor hope you enjoy book. Still wondering as to how my memory had only remembered lots of letters to and fro from all the members until she finally goes to Guernsey. In fact gave it to a friend a few months ago who returned it as “she didn’t like books told through letters”. Must try to get it back to someone I sent it to a few weeks ago!

I read the book very shortly before watching the film. I thought that on the whole they stuck quite close to the book. Trying to convey that it was told as a series of letters was always going to be difficult in a film but the events all pretty much match up.

No I don't think they invented anything that wasn't in the book. On the contrary there were some plot lines from the book they actually edited out of the film.

It's one of my favourite books, really enjoyed the film and they did stick true to the story for the most part.

I was really confused watching the film as I thought I remembered a whole section about Oscar Wilde in the book. And then it wasn’t there.

But I was really drunk whilst watching it Blush I may have been thinking of something else
