What was this book?

Hi, im trying to remember a name of a book that i read years ago.

I remember that it was set a long time ago, i think in the goldrush era. It was about a girl who worked on a market and looked after her dad and brother after her mum died. She becomes employed by a family as their nanny/maid/housekeeper. The wife of the family dies and the girl married the Husband. They go onto to charity work with children. Go to America. Have their own children.

I hope i havent got two books in one plot there but its been driving me mad.

I read that book. It was by Lesley Pearce I think but can't remember the title. I found it quite depressing!
