Novel set in Edinburgh

Please can anyone help me find a book I overheard a conversation about recently? I cannot provide many details I'm afraid apart from the fact it's set in Edinburgh, possibly around 17th century, and it's about a doctor and a hospital. There might be something about building a bridge in it too. I'm intrigued because it sounded fascinating! Not holding out much hope though from those random details .....

I think it could be " Doubting Thomas". It has got some similarities and even if it's not the one it sounds well worth a read - so thank you!

Somebody else might come along with other suggestions for you.

The obvious one is Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde,
James Miranda Barry by Patricia Duncker is another possibility. Kaite Walsh writes historical crime featuring Edinburgh and medicine such as The Wages of Sin.

Dottierichardson · 19/07/2018 22:51

Should be Kaite Welsh NOT Walsh.

Thanks for those suggestions. It's not Dr Jekyll but the other titles are promising so I'll follow them up.

The Kaite Welsh book is excellent - a female medical student turns detective in C19th Edinburgh.

I've requested the Kaite Welsh book from the library, looking forward to trying it.

Is it The Way Of All Flesh by Ambrose Parry? It’s set in 1840 about a young doctor working as an apprentice for a professor of midwifery, who starts investigating deaths of women. Don’t know if it has anything about bridge building in it though!

I just came on here to suggest the Ambrose Parry book, because I just saw it on Instagram! It doesn’t look like it is published until October though.

Acrasia · 28/07/2018 14:33

That first ‘just’ should be an ‘also’!

I've googled the Parry book and as you say it's not out yet so that can't be it I'm afraid. Also sounds a good read though. I've now got the Kaite Welsh book from library but I'm about halfway through "Snap" by Belinda Bauer so I need to finish that one first!
