which childrens' books do you NOT like

I know we're grateful if they read anything at all etc etc, but there are some books which make me howl with misery at the thought of MY having to read and others which I just wish they wouldn't read.

For me: any of those fairy books, The Secret Seven and (from long ago) anything featuring that dog, Spot or that blimmin sheep Wooly who lives on that farm with Mrs Boot and her children.

for them: Captain Underpants, Horrid Henry - everybody is so darn nasty - and that one that's a bit like Captain Underpants but is about robots.

harry potter - so over rated!

Tortington · 24/05/2007 12:27

any of them - childrens books partic for small children are a fucking misery. only when one gets to roald dahl do things become mildy entertaining

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 12:27

oh god yes. I had to read five of them out loud, I couldn't carry on. Pages and pages of wooly nonsense. Made me scream.

Custardo - some are okay. Have to say that after 3 dcs have got my reading of Burglar Bill to almost professional standard.

I also cannot stand Harry Potter. A rip-off of 'The Worst Witch' (anyone remember that?)

haggisaggis · 24/05/2007 12:34

I HATE "Maisy Mouse" with a passion!
Also didn't like reading "Flat Stanley". THere's also a M&S version of "Angelina Ballerina" taht comes complete with sound effects and is the most boring story known to man! (of course dd loves it..)

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 12:35

yes tinymum, ds2 read those and as I was saved having to read them out loud, I allowed them in the house - this is how Captain Underpants got in our house though. So, give an inch and all that.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/05/2007 12:37

I like Captain Underpants .

I can't stand bloody Owl Babies. I want to push them off their bloody branch. It is such an anti-working-mothers book, and it just annoys the hell out of me. (And I'm a SAHM!)

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 12:38

M&S have a lot to answer for, they sell those mind-numbingly boring books about mermaids and I think for those books about different people living and working in a town - can't remember their names - but do remember one about how Queen Clara lost her crown, but Fireman Fred helped her find it. You get the general idea. Yawnful.

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 12:38

Owl Babies is officially creepy. It's that bit where she 'swoops' down that always frightens me.

Rhubarb · 24/05/2007 12:38

I had a rant about this the other day, but books like Felicity Wishes and Sparkle the Fairy or whatever are like Mills and Boons for kids. They are full of shit! All about what fashion item to wear, or "and Felicity tossed back her golden curls..." It's utter bollocks!

They have no literary merit whatsoever either. I do confess I am a literary snob, but I want my kids to learn to read and talk properly, I don't want them to fill their heads with this kind of shite on a cake.

Spider · 24/05/2007 12:40

I agree that Potter books are over rated. Over written too not to mention derivative.
Sorry for stabbing another sacred cow.

I can't bear the Percy the Park Keeper books.

I'm also utterly fed up with all the anthropromophising that goes on. If I see one more animal in dungarees I might get the urge to start a book fire. Beatrix Potter is different as she's bizarre, quaint and slightly scary.

Mr Men books are shite. They seem to be written by someone who doesn't really know how to write for children. Take little Miss Late for example. References to time (She was so late she had her breakfast at 7pm) as if children of that age have a clue what the significance of 7pm is.

There are some pretty terrible books out there. And yet it's so hard to get one published.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/05/2007 12:41

I hate the whole thing. I really really hate owl babies, and I'm officially neutral on most kids' books, that's when I'm not loving them (Benjamin Blaithwait, anything by Claude Ponti, Mini Grey, etc etc).

ChipButty · 24/05/2007 12:41

Noddy - outdated tosh.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/05/2007 12:41

Oh, I can stand Mr Men. DS1 went to them after years of being stuck on Thomas, which, ok, I admit, I also hate. It's like a weirdo mafia story with trains. They spend all their time getting revenge on each other.

saralou · 24/05/2007 12:42

all the ones that ds1 makes me read over and over and over and over and over.......

motherinferior · 24/05/2007 12:43

Most of these, although for some reason I read Owl Babies rather differently and see it as Mother Always Comes Back.

I am hugely relieved that the Inferiorettes have discovered my 1970s copy of Finn Family Moomintroll (although I could have done without DD1 taking in to school as Ancient Text of Reverence) and have decided, as of this morning, that they are called Moomintroll and the Snork Maiden.

Desiderata · 24/05/2007 12:45

Maisy Mouse and Kipper.

I love Noddy picture books, but the story lines are ineffably dull.

But the ones that really make me howl with misery everytime ds picks them up are Goldilocks (just what is the point of that story?), and The Enormous Turnip ...

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 12:46

I'd let the original Noddy books in under the barrier, just because it's so very very weird really. What is it with Noddy and Tessie Bear?
Mr Men are dire, and boring AND you have to look at the pictures on the back and go through in excruciating detail who each one is.

tarantula · 24/05/2007 12:46

Disney's Winne the fucking Pooh!!!! I HATE HATE HATE him loads of long deary mindnumbingly boring crap stories about sod all. Dd has the original book and the 'crap Winnie the Pooh book' as she so kindly pointed out the other day ooops (didnt think she'd overheard that.

Rhubarb · 24/05/2007 12:47

The Grimm brothers - great stuff!

NotQuiteCockney · 24/05/2007 12:49

We had some Disney Winnie the Poo books ... gak. The colours one just had different coloured bloody lollipops in it. How is that useful or interesting? Shouldn't they have a red apple, yellow banana, whatever whatever?

Dogsby · 24/05/2007 12:49

farkign mr men

ahundredtimes · 24/05/2007 12:50

omg, Notquitecockney, should have mentioned the Thomas books right at the start. Of course. Must have wiped them from my memory. They're so long winded and Henry, frankly, a ponce.
