I am attending a 'community selection night' at a bookstore to choose items for my local library. I'm after recommendations of up to date good reads. I have had a look of some of the other threads for suggestions but anything already really popular (e.g. Eleanor Oliphant) the library will already have. So has anyone read anything great that hasn't made the must-read lists yet? I'm in Australia so bang up to date UK titles/ new UK authors may not have made it here yet. I like general fiction, memoir, dystopian fiction, female/ feminist slant. Authors like Margaret Atwood, Kate Atkinson, Barbara Kingsolver if that helps.

I'm also taking my 10 year old DD to pick books for the children's library so suggestions re children's titles most welcome. Her favourite books this year have been War Horse -M. Morpungo, Wonder -RJ Palacio, Once - Morris Gleitzman, Beyond The Bright Sea - Lauren Wolk and The Wolf Wilder - Katherine Rundell. She likes graphic novels too, Raina Telgemeier style rather than The Walking Dead Wink .

Thanks.

One of my very favourite children's books is Libby Hathorn's Thunderwith. It's not a new book, but it's wonderful (she is an Australian author). Also Because of Winn-Dixie (Kate Camillo is American).

The women who write the Go Fug Yourself fashion blog have a couple of really excellent YA books, which are really funny and very thoughtful. The first is Spoiled and the sequel is Messy.

Some big newer books here that might appeal are ‘dear mrs bird’- that was fab - and ‘the lido’. I’ve also liked ‘the cows’ dawn o porter ooh and ‘greatest hits’ by Laura Barton. Or ‘undercover mother’ by Emma Robinson or Lizzie page ‘The war nurses’.

Re kids books- Claude is going to be made into a film soon/now. Do you know it? It’s great for young kids. Favourites here also include tom gates/David Williams - ooh and the boy made of snow (that’s ya I think) or the polar bear explorers club. My kids loved the wonder too.

My DD 11 loves Tamsin Cooke's books, Cat Burglar, Mission gone wrong and Stunt Double.

Thank you all. Some great suggestions.
@DancelikeEmmaGoldman Thanks for reminding me about Kate DiCamillo - Winn Dixie is a favourite of DD's so I'll have a look for some of her other titles.
@Helmetbymidnight We don't have any of those adult titles in our library so those will be great to check out. I really fancy 'Dear Mrs Bird'. I've never heard of 'The Polar Bear Explorers Club' but the library has 14 copies so it must be popular. I will have to borrow it for the DDs. It looks fun.
@IggyAce We haven't read any Tamsin Cooke but those look really good and the library only has Cat Burglar so I'll definitely have a look for her other titles.
Thank you all.
