107 pages into this and finding it a real boring slog. I really thought I'd like it as I like good historical fiction but it's totally dull so far and can't get into the main characters.
Is it worth persisting or shall I call it a day on this?!

I called it a day about halfway through. I really didn't give a shit about how it ended so I decided it was a waste of time. I read a lot of historical fiction, and the reviews were so good, I thought it would be great.

I felt the same! Also read a lot of historical fiction but thought that this felt weirdly dated - I know that’s a daft thing to say about historical fiction!

I’m also a bit sick of books that appear to denote their main characters as someone’s relative 🙄 cf The Bonesetter’s Daughter, The Apothecary’s Auntie, The Milkman’s Mother etc....ok I’ve made a couple of those up but you see what I mean...

Glad it's not just me! I officially give up then it's super dull. Agree about the whole 'sister' 'daughter' stuff ...

It was our book group choice last month and most of us enjoyed it. Liked the little twist at the very end!

So do I read it or not Grin

danadas · 28/04/2018 22:17

I would finish it - it's quick enough to get through. I thought it was OK, not my usual sort of read.

Bluesheep8 · 14/05/2018 07:55

I gave up on it too, about three quarters of the way through. I think I've only ever done this with one other book previously.
