Is anyone else reading this in anticipation of the film coming out?

I was looking for a novel to have on the go and saw the film advertised. I'm enjoying it so far.

I saw the poster today for the movie. I know I've read the book, and I liked it, but I don't remember a thing about it Blush

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 12/04/2018 22:12

Oh I liked this book and would definitely go to see a film of it

OCSockOrphanage · 13/04/2018 16:39

Loved it!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 13/04/2018 16:41

I loved this and am going to find it again. Didn't know it was being made into a film, great!

80sMum · 13/04/2018 16:47

I thought that book was truly awful! One of the worst I have read in recent years. I don't understand what people like about it.

runningdoll · 13/04/2018 20:04

It did occur to me (and I am in no way presuming that this is your reason for disliking the book 80's Mum) that it may be a very odd read if you were under a certain age. Letter writing pretty much died out years ago. I can remember receiving newsy type letters as a child, especially from relatives who didn't have a phone in the house.

80sMum, have you read/did you like 84 Charing Cross Road? If you haven't/didn't, then epistolary novels may not be your thing. As runningdoll says, letter writing, receiving and replying has really not been typical behaviour for a good 30 years.

RedPanda25 · 13/04/2018 20:08

Oh I loved the book and can't wait for the film! Also loved Charing Cross Road too.

HappydaysArehere · 21/04/2018 14:16

Loved this book. Read it some years ago and it stays with me. I really liked the letter format and am disappointed if the film changes that. I gave it to a friend who couldn’t stand the letter format and gave up on it but she likes what she describes as straight forward books. However, read it and do so before you see the film. I am looking forward to it but suspect I will hate the changes.

I have read it, can't remember a thing about it but I know I recommended it to others at the time.

I’m a Guernsey Girl and my family grew up in Guernsey during the war, under the Nazis. I haven’t read the book yet but did see the film last week and loved it. Obviously we’re all very excited in Guernsey about the film putting our little Island on the map. It’s a lovely story and gives a good account of what it was like living here and following the orders of the Germans and it was very, very hard for people. I like the fact the film portrays this as many people are unaware that we were occupied or what that means. But there is more to the film then that, it’s funny, warm and just really lovely.

The film wasn’t made in Guernsey which is disappointing but understandable and the director and author visited many times to scout for locations but felt it was too costly so don’t be believing that Guernsey looks anything like you see in the film!

VQ1970 · 21/04/2018 14:51

I should add that Guernsey is much more beautiful then the locations in the film Grin

iheartmichellemallon · 21/04/2018 15:22

I loved the book - can't wait to see the movie. Disappointing to hear its not filmed in Guernsey though.

FabiantheFish · 05/05/2018 22:43

I'm another hater and I usually love epistolary novels. It was specific parts of the plot that I didn't like but I won't mention due to spoilers.
It's a long time since I read it but I think there was also not enough difference in style, vocabulary etc between the different characters writing letters.

HappydaysArehere · 07/05/2018 09:18

I read this book some years ago and loved it. I hope they don’t muck it up.
