What is this book I read at school?

I'm watching Joanna Lumley's Trans-Siberian journey and it has reminded me of a book I read at school. It was a story about a young boy's journey and I can't for the life of me remember anything else about it! Can't remember the author, the title or what it was about but I do remember that I loved it.

Can anyone help?

The Endless Steppe was about a girl. Bloody loved that book.

I am David has a long journey but somewhere in Eastern Europe, not Siberia, I think

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't think it is any of them. I found it a few years ago and recognised the title straight away but none of these ring any bells. Have googled them though and might find some extra reading material from this thread!

Letter for the King? We got a beautiful version of that a few years ago, my kids have read it loads of times. Not Siberia though...
