This is such a good story - so beautifully written and really short - pikced it up form the library for a quick read and LOVED it.

Haven't seen the film but would love to now.

I haven't read that one but I have read Bad Dirt and the Shipping News and have just started That Old Ace In The Hole. She is a fantastic writer - charatcer, plot, sense of place, she has it all.

this is so lovely though - try it Califrau please - does not have the endless descriptions of the shipping news (beautiful as they are!) and it really is a half hour read. I was just chugging along with it not feeling overly involved and then couldn't stop thinking about it and was so moved by it.

Ahhhh!

Blu - the shipping news is a lovely paced book - that and 'the sea the sea' come flooding back to me whenever I am in remote rocky sea places. Have not read that old ace in the hole but I do find her amazingly evocative.

yes I read it a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it.

Did you get the novella on it's own or did you get the book of short stories? (it's been published in both formats). If you got the book of short stories look out for an absolutely cracking very short story (4 pages IIRC) called 'The Blood Bay'.

Also loved The Shipping News 'Farts Fell Four' and squidburgers (yuck)

Yes a beautiful and poignant story.

Also loved The Shipping News.

However struggled with Accordion Crimes and Postcards.

it made me cry, but then so did the film. Didn't really like her other short stories TBH.

baffledbb · 08/05/2007 14:06

I read the story after i saw the film, and although I knew before I read it it was a short story I was still amazed that such a long film was very true to the story.
I'm not a great reader but I was really moved by the prose in this.
The bit were Jack says something to Ennis about not being able to "quit" him is the bit I remember best for some reason.
You know I'm going to look for the book and read BM again and I'll actually try to read the other stories this time as well.

suedonim · 08/05/2007 14:45

Yes, I read it when it first came out. haven't seen the film (yet!) but was amazed they could make it long enough.

Liked The Shipping News a lot. Loathed the film of "Brokeback Mountain" - is the story better? Couldn't get on with that banjo-thing at all!
