Is this seen as a classic? It's so sweet! I've never read it before, but I found an edition with a lovely cover by Roz Chast, and bought it last summer, and am finally reading it now, having found myself too spacy to even read the New Yorker.

I think it's a classic - marvellous read

RustyBear · 05/05/2007 21:49

Well I have it in the Penguin Classic edition, so I would guess so. I love it and there's at least one other fan on MN, as AuntAdaDoom was lurking a little while ago (unless that was you?)

MuminBrum · 05/05/2007 21:53

It's definitely a classic! Isn't it wonderful? Too spacey to read the New Yorker - I hear you - I have a small pile of unread NYs festering by my bed .

GibbonInARibbon · 05/05/2007 21:54

I wanted to love it, but it just didn't do it for me.

Mind you, had to study it for English and that's not the same as reading it for pleasure.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/05/2007 21:55

I normally read the NY when I am feeling out of it, or on planes! Am quite at the idea that I'm that out of it.

I really do have to get a good night's sleep.

I just started reading it yesterday, so no, that wasn't me.

And yeah, I know what you mean, GiaR, I'm sure lots of lovely books were made horrible for me by being made to read them.

I've seen an AuntAdaDoom on here, so it must be a classic .

I love the contraceptive advice bit.

I love it

it is one of the funniest books ever

MissGolightly · 08/05/2007 10:24

oo yes, "something nasty in the woodshed when I was no bigger than a titty wren"

One of my all-time favourites, I re-read it regularly especially when I'm ill or cross. I like the way she asterisks the passages she is particularly proud of to invite you to admire them!
