Anyone read anything by Maggie O'Farrell

I found this book the other day I didn't even know I had. Maggie O'Farrell 'The Distance Between Us' I'm struggling to find anything I can stick with just now and if it's worth starting. Wondered if anyone had read this or any other of her books. Are they thriller type books?

I think it was her first novel. I loved it. Not a thriller but definitely a mystery.

ScreamingValenta · 03/03/2018 11:02

I read 'After You'd Gone' which I think was her first book. I found it pretentiously written and rather irritating - I was just about interested enough to finish it, but it didn't inspire me to read any more of her novels. The 'twist' was predictable and anticlimactic.

Everyone raves about her but I started one about a father going missing and I stopped halfway through. I found it really slow and boring.

I love love love her books!!

Thanks all for your replies. I'll certainly give it a go later on today.

I love her books. I've read all except her current one which is on my too read pile.

Esme Lennox wasn't her first (not that it matters!). I think After You'd Gone was.

I liked The Hand That First Held Mine.

Ellisisland · 06/03/2018 11:00

her kind of memoir called 'I am, I am, I am: Seventeen brushes with death" is amazing

Not yet but this interview/excerpt was interesting. It's from the collection Ellis recommends.
She would definitely be played by Catherine Tate if someone filmed her life, the likeness is uncanny.

I have come to Maggie O'Farrell recently and I LOVE her!I read The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox which I thought was brilliant, and have since read 'After You'd Gone' which I loved also.
I got 'This must be the place' out the library which I liked, but didn't love as much as the first two, and I've got 'The Hand That First Held Mine' as the next book on my tbr pile. Wouldn't call them thrillers at all, but I would give it a go if you are looking for something.

NoqontroI · 06/03/2018 21:56

I love her books. Especially 'after you'd gone'.

MealyPotatoes · 07/03/2018 22:35

I read both After You’d Gone and The Distance Between Us. Neither did much for me and I haven’t read anything by her since.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2018 19:26

"I liked The Hand That First Held Mine."

It was just OK from what I remember.

Hygge · 10/03/2018 22:21

I enjoyed The Distance Between us, My Lover's Lover, and After You'd Gone, and I've just read I Am, I Am, I Am and I liked that too.

confuzzled42 · 10/03/2018 22:23

I love her stuff. Definitely worth a punt.

MsLumley · 21/03/2018 22:01

I love her books but agree the one set in the heatwave in the 70s where the father disappears wasn't her best.
