I'm thinking of abandoning this book. I normally love his books. Has anybody read it who can encourage me to carry on?

I listened to it on Radio 4. Thought it was just okay. I don’t really like Ian McEwan.

Give up on it. Read Hag-seed instead. Or one of the other Hogarth Shakespeare retold books.

I don't really understand why people enjoy his books. His writing seems so smug but also a bit dim. A reflection on his character from what I am told.

I find him hit and miss. Loved Enduring Love, Atonement and The Child in time but couldn't stand Nutshell or On Chesil Beach.

I hated. I had been looking forward to it, got it from the library but absolutely loathed it. I have liked quite a few of Ian McEwan's books in the past. The Children Act and Sweet Tooth were both really good reads. I loved Atonement, but this was just awful.

Glad to hear it's not just me. I've loved all of his books that I've read. The Children's Act was really good. So, I didn't want to give up on this without hearing what others thought. My to-read pile is pretty huge so I will waste no more time on this book.

Thank you!

Another one who didn't like it! He's definitely hit and miss for me....

I normally like McEwan but really didn’t enjoy Nutshell. Found the narrative voice very irritating.

NataliaOsipova · 31/01/2018 18:10

Agree - not one of his better efforts....

Generally speaking I love Ian McEwan, love Enduring Love and Solar particularly. This I finished but found unsettling and didn't enjoy it.

In the minority, but I liked it and found it a charming riff on Hamlet.
